I was very fortunate to get accepted to TCOM 2 days ago and they said that I can establish residency if I differ my admissions for one year and go live in texas deeming me a recipient of in state tuition (10,000 compared to 26,000)

I'm comming out of undergrad and I'm afraid to lose my rythem if that makes any sense. I have an aunt that lives in dallas and I'm sure I would be able to work somthing out with her. I'm not sure if I want to wait another year or not would it be stupid if I didn't? I am waiting to see if I am going to be a recipient of a deans scholarship giving me instate tuition for my first year in medical school I find out april/may about that. If I get that I probably would just go to medical school next year. I want to do the OMM fellowship 5 year program they pay for one years tuition and give 20,000 dollar stipend for 2 years if I'm accepted. Does anyone know if the OMM research facility at TCOM offers job positions for pre medical students that differed a year to medical school to work as a Research assistant?

I'm not sure what to do the money aspect of the differ a year choice looks great but should I just go and pay for it when I'm a doctor and not worry about the cost the out of state tuition is one of if not the lowest of all Osteopathic medical schools. Low cost of living all that jazz. Does anyone know if a lot of out of state students accepted to TCOM do this or do they just pay the price?

A year off can be a very good thing, but you certainly don't have to do it.
Congratulations!

Congrats on the acceptance!

What would be your excuse to defer? I heard it's pretty difficult unless you have a good reason. A reason of, I want to gain residency in your state so I don't have to pay out of state tution is not a good portrayal. I would inquire about it in the TCOM class threads.

Personally, I would defer a year. Being out of school for a year allows you to do things that you have always wanted to do but couldn't due to the constraints of being in school. Many students have enjoyed their year off or wish they could have taken some time off between undergrad and medical school. That's only my opinion though. Once again, congrats!

i would defer if they let you...

congrats!! i've come to know that many M1 students who went straight to med. school wished they had taken a year off and many who has taken a year off came into M1 firing off making excellent grades....
i got accepted into nsucom this year but opted to sit out for the year to pay down my loans, etc.... plus, i've never had a down year and if i dont take this year off, i wont have any down time for a very very long time. i intend to do research the summer between M1 and M2.

I can't tell you what to do...

but, look at it this way. If you get in state tuition, that's saving $40,000 over the course of 4 years (unless Tx let's you switch to IS after first year, I haven't researched that state). How much would 40K be after it took you X years to pay it off with interest?

Now... we're all going to be in debt up to our eyeballs anyway, so do consider other factors...

Having taken time off (unintentionally) I have seen it as a blessing in disguise. I am glad to have gotten a few years of life experience before hopping into med school.

I totally agree...I also am currently taking a year off..(unintentionally)...I'll be going to NSUCOM next year.. and I'm loving it!! A bunch of my friends who are M1's now really wished they had a year off.....It's a great opportunity to travel, relax, spend time with family, so anything that you wont have time for in med school...etc.

I would definitely defer for a year. The less debt i'm in after graduation, the better. Plus you can make some money in your year off and save up.

Congrats on your acceptance! 🙂

By the way, to the OP...it's "defer" not "differ"

but yeah I'd take a year off if possible

I'd totally take a year off too if it's possible. YOu'll have to come up with a good reason though. Not sure what TCOM's policy is but at CCOM: Deferments are only considered under extreme circumstances when a student is physically unable to begin classes. If granted, a student may defer their admission for one year only.

And you need a doctor's note too! G"luck to you!! And congrats on your acceptance!!!

the OP stated that TCOM explicitly told her that she could..

they said that I can establish residency if I differ my admissions for one year and go live in texas deeming me a recipient of in state tuition (10,000 compared to 26,000)

with that being said, to the OP, i say go for it.. that's HUGE savings, and you said you've got an aunt in dallas? maybe you can work something out where you can "rent" from her, and in actuality, not even pay her rent. or pay her rent, but just have her hold on to the money and give it back to you after the year is up (if she's nice enough), that way you can just stay in NY for that year off... and, if it becomes an issue, you could always fly down to dallas and get a texas driver's license..

as you can tell, i'm the master at scheming my way through things

i completely agree. you should pretend to live in dallas and then do something amazing that you will not have time for later. I am taking a year off right now and I moved to france...definitely the best decision that i have ever made. I think that after having this time off I will be more than ready to work my ass off next fall (but i guess this would vary from person to person...). if you have something else that you have always dreamed of doing take the year off and go for it! you're already in so you have nothing to lose! good luck!

defer I am sorry I feel like an idiot now 🙁

DEFINITELY take the year off. It's a no-brainer.

$40,000 debt for 4 years of medical school + a year to relax, get ready, and enjoy yourself before the biggest undertaking of your academic life

versus

$104,000 debt for 4 years of medical school + no year to relax, somewhat rush to get ready, and then plunge into the biggest undertaking of your academic life (and possibly burn-out)

No-brainer.

me too😍 At first I hated the idea..but time off has been great for me..and now I am recharged to start med school. I was burnt out after undergrad. I have traveled, saved money and done EVERYTHING I wanted to before med school..next box to check off..med school..
