Should I do NHSC?

I'm white, not a recepient of EFN (exceptional financial need federal aid), and not disadvantaged although my parents have a low income.

Considering only 22 dental scholarships are given out versus 600 applications, that's less than 5% chance of getting it.


On the other hand, I'm going to a private school looking at around 350k debt + undergraduate debt so I am freaking out.

But I will probably do IBR for 25 years if this fails. But I'm not even sure if it's worth applying.
 
I don't think it's fixed at 22 dental scholarships, it varies per year depending on funding. If I remember correctly, they are anticipating more dental scholarships this year.
 
I say apply!!! You will never know if you don't apply. Getting the scholarship is just as hard as getting in to dental school and look at you, you have been accepted to dental school 🙂
Let's say you don't get the scholarship during your four years, they do have the loan repayment program that you can apply for when your done. Keep going until you can't go any further.

The bolded is completely false. Nevertheless OP, all you have to lose is time and much to gain if you receive the scholarship. If you are serious about it I would apply. Do you have a lot of volunteering under your belt (with people to write recommendations for you)?

Are you doing it just for the money, or do you actually plan to work as a dentist in an under-served community? If it's just for the money, then do yourself and your future patients a favor and don't apply.
 
I'm doing it for both....I want to serve but I also want to be debt free.

I am not sure why you wouldn't apply. What do you got to lose besides a little time? BUT we're all going to dental school so I could say on our behalf that time is a factor that does not matter to us seeing that once we're done we'll have been in school for 21 years of our lives.
 
banking on NHSC is not very wise. it's not a matter of ''should i do it'' it's a matter of ''will i get it''

Yes that's true, but should I do it should not be the case "will I get it" is wiser and more optimistic than "should I do it"
