I am a rising senior. I am a student at a top 10 liberal arts school with a 3.3 cGPA, and a 3.1 sGPA.

I have taken several courses at other universities and colleges, such as physics.

I am taking general chemistry 2 right now, and I think I will end up with a C and that will drop my overall sGPA to a 3.26. If i drop it as a Withdrawl, I will have a 3.35 sGPA. I know I will have to retake the class eventually, but I am freaking out. I have never withdrawn from a class before, and I am taking this class along with a biochemistry class. I may have over extended myself!!!

I am looking to apply mainly to D.O. schools.

Can someone provide input or advice on what to do.

I've never withdrawn from a course, so I'm not much help there. But what if you finish out the course, and then retake it? DO schools will replace the initial grade with the most recent one.

Even if you take the C, you're still above "the golden" 3.25gpa. Donts drop it- you'll have to retake it. Now you're being anal 😉 too much prep for that when you're going to your interviews!

Edit: but that's from someone who dropped chem 2 back in 2005 and retook it that summer to stay on track for her pharmD. If you need to make up for something grade wise, then do it, but if you're going to retake the class either way (ie W) at least take the C then retake! My 2 cents...

Thank you both for your responses. Anyone else? I have until next Wednesday to withdraw...

1 C won't hold you back and you can retake.

However for MD its probably better to withdraw. 1 withdraw won't kill you. I have friends who got into MD schools with a couple withdraws. It's recoverable either way. Just do whatever it takes not to get a D or F.

I think a C in a freshman level pre-req course, while taking as a senior, is not a good thing. I would withdraw. If asked about it in interviews for what ever reason, saying that you realized you had to much on your plate and decided to withdraw would show better decision making skills than hanging in there for a C.

Also, how are you allowed to take biochemistry without having already taken gen chem?

I want to address this for additional feedback.

At my home institution, you take a "principles of chemistry" 100 level class. upon passing of that, the curriculum is structured in such a way that you then can tak "intro to analytical, intro to physical, or intro to biological. that is the new cirriculum. when i was a sophomore, i took principles of chemistry and then was advised to take "chemical equilibrium" which is essentially intro to analytical. I got a C- in that class. I P/F it putting a P on my transcript without it affecting my GPA. I needed one more inorganic chemistry requirement, so i am taking gen chem 2 this summer...

The circumstances are unique. I had a very bad freshman year, my first semester; my cGPA was a 2.76. Presently, my cGPA is a 3.3 with only one class P/F. My goal was to take some summer classes at an easier school to boost my gpa, but that has not been the case. I think I may withdraw if I do poorly on the second exam and take the class under less stressful circumstances. Its just that i am paying out of state tuition at around 800 for the ****ing class that hurts!

Well if you withdraw that money is essentially down the drain...
I dunno rock and a hard place...if your mainly going DO I say keep it then retake. MD, withdraw and retake...

Wait, I thought you would still have above a 3.25? If not, then def withdraw

If you can graduate within 4 years with that withdrawal, then withdraw. If you were planning on retaking it anyways then withdraw.

If you withdraw, you'll definitely need a retake, which is more money. If you have taken the MCAT and scored well, then a withdraw is not necessary.

Going into my senior year, I would have a 3.26 sGPA assuming I get a C for the course. I have at least 7 more science classes to take since I am taking gen a gap year. I'm taking 3 science classes in the fall, 2 in the spring while prepping for the mcat and 2 or 3 more science classes between summer 2016 and fall 2016. Conservatively, I see myself getting a 3.3 or 3.4 science gpa when all said and done

Sorry, if I seem to be overly neurotic or anxious, but I don't I am anticipating doing average to slightly above average for the new mcat aka 50th percentile. I want to ensure that my GPA is at least somewhat competitive...

Just an update: got an A in the class, so I will now officially consider myself a neurotic pre-med. Thanks to everyone for the advice though, I considered it all very seriously!

Haha, the same thing just happened to me. My 77% got curved to an A-.
