Soo I need some advise. I have recently been accepted to a DO program and I am currently enrolled in a SMP. Does everyone have any experience with dropping out the SMP because it's pointless when you're already accepted. I do not think my acceptance was conditional on the completion of the SMP. I will ask the admissions committee before I do anything.

The only reason that I am even considering to drop out is cost. I would save a semesters worth of tuition/ living expenses (~20K). and I could be working to make money.

Has everyone else done this before? is this common?

Any thoughts or advise are welcome.

Talk to the DO school above all. Acceptances are almost always conditional on completion of your "current degree". So basically if on your app you said you were in an SMP, they are expecting you to complete it. I'm sure if you talk to them and explain that its a financial issue rather than a motivation/performance one, they may say its OK, but as you said talk to them BEFORE you do anything.

Honestly, if you don't want to continue (and obviously if it won't jeopardize your acceptance), and you aren't going to wait and see if you get any other acceptances, there's no point to continue it. The only bad thing is that it would be an issue if something happened and you could no longer attend the school that accepted you, and you had to reapply, but the money might be worth the risk. Also, you'd lose out on the Masters, but other than adding letters to your name, its pretty useless.

Goro's post (#8) says dropping out shouldn't be a problem.

If the acceptances aren't hinging on your performance in the SMP, then I don't see why you wouldn't want to drop out. In fact, it would be incredibly stupid to take on more debt before med school.

Of course, this is an online forum. Go ask your school (DO school that accepted you) what you should do.
