We had an OSCE. Before the exam day we had practiced several times. Our professor had demonstrated everything to us and also we had gone over the questions to ask during history taking. I was fully prepared going in as I knew what to expect. After my practical the patient told me positive things only and assured me how I did well. Then the grade comes and I was given an abysmal 60%. Every effort to get grade appeal has been futile and since that practical was 50% of our grade I will only end up failing the course. What's the best action to take going forward? My parents are thinking of getting an attorney. Please advise. Thanks

So a test that is at least 50% about emotional/social intelligence caught somebody who doesn’t have the ability to humbly reflect on his/her interactions with others. Seems like it worked?

Reflect, learn, do better next time. On the off chance this was for real.

What was the reasoning for the 60% grade? Did you ask for constructive feedback?

Unless you feel there is broad institution-level discrimination that is the root cause of your grade, I don't see retaining an attorney helping you.

The standardized patients were to give us constructive feedbacks at the end. He told that he enjoyed working with me. He told me that he liked the fact that I explained every physical exam to him so he had an idea of what I was doing. He told me he liked how I showed empathy had good skills.
How can he give me that positive feedback only to give me a 60% grade after?

Does your school not videotape the SP encounters? Ours does for this very reason so that if contested you can review with a professor and discuss why you got a certain grade or possibly get it regraded

No they don't. Our fate lies in the hands on the SPs

Take a dump on your professor's desk in retaliation.

Yikes, what kind of school grades their OSCEs so heavily.

I heard the FBI has set up a hotline for this kind of academic harassment from universities...

Is the lawyer to sue the parents for not teaching their kids how to deal with adversity? Seriously, there are mechanisms to look into these things. Learn why you failed and make the necessary adjustments to your preparations. This is strange enough to be true. We have had parents wanting to sit in on the med school interview. What is the penalty for extreme helicopter parenting?

Don't call an attorney. Unless you want him/her to laugh hysterically and then hang up the phone. Did you ask for a breakdown of what points you missed and a remediation plan to improve?

Never mind, I think instead of an attorney or going to a professor, please seek help with mental health professional.

Very uphill climb if you want to sue and I would say, at best, it’s a dubious legal claim to make. The Supreme Court has looked at grading cases and has said that it will generally not second guess a school’s decision unless it can be demonstrated that those at the school did not actually exercise professional judgment.

This is good advice for the boring and repetitive threads that talk about suing schools simply because of getting a bad grade
