should i get Facebook for med school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

hahah. You right, I deserved that.

but really....

I would, my medical school has a "Class of" group where you can ask questions and such.

Share price of Facebook is inflated and buying the company would be a poor decision. You should use your capital to own a company with a more proven track record, like Google.

I would. Like a poster above, we have class page. Most of the time it's filled with worthless things. But people also post about the due dates of things as well as good study sites, etc. I think it's a good idea.

I'm actually curious about this as well. I deleted mine over two and a half years ago and haven't even felt tempted to go back on. I can see how it'd be beneficial for med school though, especially towards the beginning. Then again, who knows what the internet/facebook will look like a year from now...

Their P/E is 1,848. :wow:

I remember that their initial valuation generated a P/E of ~100...

Serious response - yes. My class is very active on our FB page, and people who don't have a FB miss out on important reminders, study guides, flashcards, etc that people post. Why don't you just get one for a couple months and see if your class actively uses the page, and if they don't, delete it?

Is it weird to get a Facebook just for the purpose to joining the class FB group? I don't want to be some weird guy with almost no pictures and like 5 friends on his list. 🙁 I hate people seeing this kind of stuff, it makes me feel weird.

Wow that sounded kinda sad. But seriously.

I'll friend you to make it 6 if you want.

 Don't worry about it, it's just that there are only a few people that I feel the need to hang on to once I displace myself from my hometown. The list just feels tiny next to people with hundreds of friends and they might see my weak FB account as an indication of a weirdo. 😳

I don't have facebook. But I do have friends that use it and pass along anything useful via email, so I get all the benefit without having to filter out the b.s. and without the temptation of becoming an e-stalker.

i've been struggling with this too. i deleted my fb about a year ago bc i rly hated the temptation of always being an e-stalker. but i'm considering getting another one just for med school to make the transition easier. Shaker I don't think it's weird to get it just for the purpose of the fb group. that group is probably the most useful thing i will use on facebook. hopefully at this point in our lives no one is going to judge over how many fb friends you have...

Yeah, just do it. After you're accepted, find the facebook group. There might be meetups before school starts and updates, due dates, study materials once school begins. You don't have to put any person information on your facebook if you don't want to, but it's a good resource.

There's a place and time for e-stalking: that time is during a roommate hunt. I've seen plenty of people post roommate requests and offers on class pages for grad/med school, and it's nice to be able to do a little digging. Plus, you wouldn't see many of the "come split rent with mee I'm gonna be a broke MS1" posts w/o it.

i wouldn't be too insecure about the small number of friends or information. theres a movement towards the more private, so if anyone thinks its odd (which, seriously why would they even care) just tell them you like your privacy. honestly who cares what you put on there? use it to get info to help yourself do better. isn't that what matters?

Do you need it to stay in the loop socially though? I kinda want to use it for general networking purposes too since I won't have the people that I have here at home. Is there a way to hide this information from the people you add as friends too? I have weird thing about people seeing stuff about my life. 😳

:wtf:

This guy only reposts what other people have already posted. Some kind of forum bot? I don't get the point though. Where's the link for V1AGI2A?

I think there are options to hide that stuff... I want to make a facebook to join my class page, but I don't want anyone to be able to see my personal details. I hope that's possible, because I would also feel self-conscious with only a few friends 😛

I rejoined Facebook after a year long hiatus just to join the med school group....what the hell happened to Facebook?

I don't like it! ...especially after getting four emails in the middle of the night suggesting I friend people I haven't seen in ten years.

Facebook stahp. You're creeping me out.

ydi for giving facebook your real email address 😛

But seriously, don't give facebook your real email address. Mine has an old junk address that doesn't even exist anymore...it pops up a notification every month or so wigging out about it, but it's one click to dismiss and I don't have to worry that it'll invent new ways to circumvent my 'no email notifications' settings like it used to.

You need to change your email settings. There are few things you can't customize the crap out of.

Yeah, as someone who didn't get a Facebook until ~8 months before school started I can guarantee no one will care. You will be adding so many people from just orientation week alone, both in your class and in the classes above you. I don't know what I would do without access to my class FB group because you'll find stuff like housing info, books for sale, studying advice/homework help/study guides, TA sessions, social events, club meetings, last-minute reminders about due dates, etc. Sure you'll get some of this info via email, but most of it is announced only the FB group. The only downsides are 1) I still find myself wasting tons of time on FB since I'm still relatively new to it compared to other people 😛 and 2) People can get really stressed and high-strung during test week, so I sign on a lot less around exam time.

TL;DR -- Get the Facebook account, and if you don't like it then just deactivate/delete.

🤣 That one hit close to home.

That is what is so creepy. I never gave them my real email address. I used my usual spam email then it asked to connect to gmail (which I assumed would be to the account I had given them) and it connected to my other account. I know how notification filters work...

I just feel like now I'm in skynets system.

I've been an active FB user, but I'm contemplating on getting a brand new second account just for the med school class page, kinda like another account for my professional side while using my current account for my friends and personal life. On the other hand, I feel it will be weird if I don't have anyone on my friend list to start with for that new account. What do you guys think ?

Just play around with the security settings...maybe create a 'professional contact' group which is limited from seeing certain aspects (pics, things from before a certain date, things posted by other friends) and add any med contacts there. Facebook security is pretty customizable once you start delving into it.
