Should I go into Podiatry if my father is a well established DPM?

What do you guys think? I still have time to decide because i'm still an undergrad but I want to make my decision soon so i know if i really gotta do well to get into med school 🙂
BTW, I would be going to NYCPM if I become a podiatrist. Offer me some info, thanks.

just ask your father, thats what i did!

you should do well anyway. this isn't about doing good enough or making money. health care is about doing the best you can do so that people can get quality health care. if that's not your drive then maybe ur intentions aren't the best...but anyways enough about that

do well anyway and you won't have to worry about anything. college isn't that hard anyway if you put some effort into it. if ur dad is well established then sure, go DPM - it'll be easier TO DO WELL and you'll have a less stressful time.

I just meant it'll be way easier to get into Podiatry school then med school that's all. My dad puts in a lot of hours I do know that. It's just that Podiatrists get so much "****" compared to an MD I don't know if I like that.

pods do get alot of bs..but its mostly from the uninformed/or ppl who are insecure about their own level of knowledge

personally, i have alot of family in podiatry so ive had the luxury of seeing alot of different aspects of the field
the decision i made wasnt easy
but in the end..i feel comfortable with it and know that ill earn my respect
if the bs is going to bother you...you have to ask yourself if you can overcome it and prove yourself to all of those who will take potshots at you
if you dont think you can or dont want to....then your decision should be alot easier...
in the end you have to love what you do..and everything else will fall into place

as far as schools go...dont overlook temple...its a great program

Very true, and excellent points. I think one of the problems at-large is that 90% of people are uniformed about podiatry and the benefits associated with DPMs.

I honestly can't decide. My dad tells me he makes a good salary off of Podiatry. He even said since his 20 + years in the business he's made more money each year. He also says that MD's get plenty of **** too; it's not just the DPM's. According to him some of his M.D. buddies make less then him. He did say though that you have to do surgeries if you really want to be successful.

i think thats pretty accurate...and if your planning on going into practice with him, you should be relatively problem free(provided of course you want to be a DPM)
couple of points to be wary of though
future pods often (but not always) have a harder time of getting on some insurance plans, and getting started is tougher for pods(though again, in a family practice you can avoid alot of that)
and of course our lobbyists arent as good as our friends in the MD/DDS world

goodluck regardless
and shadow some MD's and DDs's too, see what fits you

I say go for it and become a pod. I mean, assuming your father lets you, you'll be coming out of podiatry school and joining an established family practice. That's a great way to go. You can't do wrong.

Well he said he'll hand me the key and say goodbye 🙂
