Hi everyone, I was wondering if I would be able to get some guidance for what my next steps should be. I graduated in 2019, working during my gap year, and planning on doing a 2 years masters (free with a good stipend) starting September 2020. I applied to both to US schools and Canadian schools this cycle, but unfortunately didn't get an interview. I'm pretty sure its because I applied late for the US cycle and my low CARS score for Canada that stopped me from getting an interview. My stats are not that bad, (3.94/513 with 125 CARS and third MCAT), with a diverse and unique amount of ECs/research.

Currently, my whole family is thinking of moving to the US in the next 4 years after studies (they all will be getting a green card except me, got super unlucky as I'm over 21), so that's one of my pulls towards US. Same time compared to the US, the med school debt burden is much lower in Canada, comparing $400k/$500k US med to $100k Canadian med (USD dollar). As a Canadian international student in the US, it might be difficult for me to land some of the competitive residencies, as my only options for MD schools seem to be mid/low tier schools (NYMC, Wayne, GW, Rosalind Franklin). So lots of factors, but not sure which ones are the most meaningful to make a decision.

As I am doing a masters, if I feel as if US medical schools is much better to pursue, I will probably quit midway to go there (as I've heard masters is not too useful), while if go Canadian med, I will finish my masters and then apply (masters helps a bit for few Canadian schools that I meet the cutoffs for). If you were stuck in my situation, where would you pursue medical school? My family isn't well off, so I'll have to be covered 90% using loans to fund med school.

Appreciate the guidance.

What were your other 2 MCAT's?
Have you already applied to all the US schools that consider IMG's with the average of your stats?

My other two MCATs were 506 (128/122/128/128) and 510 (129/124/131/126). Now I'm at 513 (129/125/129/130).

I have already applied to schools that consider international students (I'm guessing you didn't mean to say IMG?) with my stats, however I didn't get in as I had submitted complete secondary application by late July. I know many friends that got in with similar stats like me, but they applied really early so I that's what I can do next time.

I've spent too much time in the SOAP thread, sorry!
Late July isn't late at all.
If you applied to all the US schools that might have considered you (with no interviews), I'd say go Canadian if the Master's actually helps you there.
Alternatively, there are about a dozen DO schools that consider internationals.

Hi,

thank you for the advice! Just wondering is there a reason why go Canadian? Like I could try applying the upcoming cycle, thinking EDP, and if I did get a acceptance, should I reject the offer and apply for Canada the next year (to finish masters) or accept it now?

Cost and odds of matriculation come to mind.
You should check to see how many internationals with the average of your MCAT's have matriculated at the school you are considering. If you get in, attend!

It's actually not that bad considering I'm a Canadian, which some schools prefer than other types of internationals. For example, Wayne state has around 30 Canadians, which is a bunch. I know two guys who got in with 3.8-3.85/510-514 to Wayne, so I think its safe to say the odds are bit on my favor if I apply early, but of course still a risk. The costs however, yea I'm worried about that....
