Eraserhead

I was accepted at Univ of Miami this morning, and I have a trip to visit Temple and Drexel. I don't really want to go but should I check them out anyway?

NYC or DC are the places I really want to be, and I've never been to Philly.

if miami is where you want to go, then save yourself the day off from work or school. but temple or drexel have some programs that you would really love and miami doesn't offer, then hit them up.
personally, i'm going to the first med school that takes me because i can't really afford to take more days off from work and most of these schools have relatively the same programs.
on the other hand, i have a list of five schools that have specific programs i am looking for...
see what you want to do...i don't think taking a poll of SDNers will really help much

I'd have to agree...Philly, DC and NYC each have very different feels. go interview and check out philly if you have the time and the resources.

Yeah, the problem is expenses mainly, but hopefully I can postpone the interviews and then attend later if I change my mind.

I'm not looking for specific programs really, just good clinical experience and Miami definitely had that. Location wise I'd probably prefer Philly but not necessarily the exact locations of Drexel and Temple.

Drexel -- Nice area (Queen Lane) Excellent public transport.

Temple -- Dangerous area (North Phila.), but area immediately surrounding med school is safe, and good public transportation system.

Congratulations!

When do you interview at Drexel? I'll be there in November, maybe we can room together to save money. haha, j/k.

Hmmmm well I postponed both until December 1st and 2nd because I'm just not sure at this point.

I loved Miami and honestly I've heard better things about Miami...

by December I'll hear from UCSD and others that would easily cancel out Drexel/Temple.

prioritizing is tough though....

I'd go to the interviews unless you've already been accepted somewhere higher on your list. As for opinions on the schools...I absolutely loved Drexel but didn't apply to Temple because it's in a bad location (IMO). They're both worth checking out. Drexel is definitely up-and-coming, and Temple will give you a good clinical education.

CONGRATS DOCTORKEVIN!!! hope you are able to decide on whatever makes you happy. I'm not sure if you have a relationship with GOD, but praying and asking for direction isn't a bad idea. That's the only advice I can give seeing that I haven't even taken the mcat just yet!!!! again congrats

Thanks, I never thought I'd get to see all the clapping hands after my name when I first got on here last year!

Excellent pub transport - what are you smoking!!! IT SUCKS! The trains up there have limited schedules and are often cancelled and there is talk of closing the Queen lane station totally. The Drexel shuttle goes to center city but only at certain times and I have never even seen a real bus stop at the bus stop.

Temple gives you great clinical exposure and the campus is safe. However - don't go wandering around off of the campus late at night. That would be - not smart.

I interviewed and got accepted to Drexel last year but didn't go becuase I didn't like the school. They are unorganized as hell. Don't waste your time. University of Miami sounds like a much better bet. Drexel doesn't have the same type of medical center and university hospital most medical schools have, they do have a hospital a few blocks away and tertiary care centers around the area, but no major health care center. Pennsylvania is know for having way to many medical schools and hospitals. They also have horrid malpractice insurance problems. Doctors are leaving the state. Drexel is also has the largest medical school class in the nation. 250 per class, yes, thats one grand of medical students in a small underdeveloped school. Their cafeteria sucks, their library sucks, its expensive to live, its unsafe in almost all of philli, the traffic is bad, the roads are bad, the school costs 34 thousand dollars a year, no body has heard of "Drexel College of Medicine" but applying medical students, .... need I say more. You're way better off staying in Miami.

ok vigils i understand what you are saying... kind of. would you have said this if drexel was still going under the name MCP Hahnemann?

Why are you so bitter

Two things...

One: If you don't plan on attending your interviews in Decemeber, please call and cancel them! I am very active in the admissions office, and it really makes me sad when there are "no shows" since those are spots that other students could have used. Not saying you wouldn't call and cancel, just wanted to mention that.

Two: Vigils: What makes you say that Drexel is so disorganized? In addition, we have one small hospital that we are affilitated with (MCP), plus two in the city (A children's hospital and then a larger city hospital = Hahnemann). Additionally, we are affilitated with a bunch of hospitals all over Pa and Jersey.

A few comments from a second year med student at Drexel:
Our cafeteria is not "terrible" There is always a fresh salad bar, the hot entrees are not always the most healthy, but they never are at cafeterias. There are always grilled sandwiches, soups, and make your own sandwichs. Plus desserts, fruit, etc. It's small, but you don't eat in where you pick up the food, you eat in the sitting area.

Second, our library is small, but there is a small number of students at the school that actually like to study in the library. A lot of students "group" study, which can't be done in the library. For me personally, I don't enjoy sitting in a place with pindrop silence.

Just input from a student...

Of course I will call and cancel, but at this point I would still attend if my only acceptance is U of Miami.

good, I didn't want to be offensive with my comment-- it's one of my pet peeves that people don't show up. 🙂 Just wanted to say that it happens.... it's cold up here, that's a downside. ;-)

you mean people have heard of university of miami??? before applying i'd actually heard of drexel university but not university of miami.

Well U of Miami is in the US news top 60 for primary care and for research if you look online. But I don't think its necessarily more well known than Drexel.

Don't listen to this goober. They don't know what they're talking about. I'm a 2nd year student at Drexel and it's fantastic. As far as there being no major medical centers??? You must be smoking crack... We have two huge hospitals... One 2 blocks away (MCP Hospital) and another even larger hospital downtown (Hahnemann). We have shuttles that run between these hospitals and the main queen lane campus every 30 minutes. There is ample study space on campus... We have 24 private small rooms that can be used for study upstairs (each can accomodate 15 people), a library downstairs that also includes 5 more individual study rooms, we have wireless internet throughout the school, 2 large auditoriums for lectures, all of our classes are videotaped and can be viewed online, and we have a student run transcription service that records lectures word for word. The school provides free tutoring to ANY student that asks for it In short, you will have excellent support throughout your preclinical years, In addition, all of our class notes are typed up so you can just pay attention to lecturers and add to the notes which makes things easy for studying. As far as medical malpractice is concerned, yes this is true... But who cares! you're not paying for malpractice! And no one said you have to practice in philly following graduation! BTW, the actual cost of med student malpractice insurance only costs the school a few hundred dollars per person anyway. As far as living costs are concerned, don't listen to the '****. I went to school in LA where a one bedroom was 1200 and 2 bedrooms are 2000+. Philly is dirt cheap. You can get your own place here for ~550 close to the school, or share an apt and get your own room for even cheaper. Moreover, Drexel is in a very very safe residential neighborhood. You definietely can't say that about other med schools in the area! Most people live right across from the school and just walk to school everyday. As far as the 34K is concerned... Hell yeah.. I agree that is alot. But it's a private school. And it's cheaper than many other private schools. Fortunately cost of living here is super cheap. And about the size of the class, we have 2 separate curriculums depending on what style you like the best (traditional lecture style v. small group learning = IFM v. PIL). Sure our class is big and that's the great thing. You'll have plenty of friends to make. And another thing.... all of us help each other out... We're not ranked. The profs don't just give out honors to only the top 10%. They set out guidelines (ie. 90 or 91% is honors, 88 or 89 is high pass, pass >70%), so you're competing against yourself. Anyhow, if you can afford the trip, come on out.. I'm actually a student interviewer. Maybe i'll see you. If not, it's all good. Enjoy the application/interview process. It's your reward for all your hard work. Good luck.

Babinski Bob---

Much better said than I did. I'd have replied more if I didn't have an exam in 2 days! Thanks...

Mylaina.....

How many 3.0 students get into Drexel?

They don't tell us what the number of people per GPA. THey have an average incoming GPA of 3.3 or 3.4.

While most of what Mylaina and Babinksi Bob say is true, the cafeteria and library do indeed suck. The ceiling in the cafeteria is barely six and a half feet high, giving it a claustrophobic feel while also making it sound so loud you swear you were back in grade school. Also, most of the chairs in the cafeteria are broken. These are minor points, but they sure create a bad impression.

6 1/2 feet high? that's a good one... 🙂 all of us drexel students must be elves... 🙂

LOL, I don't think any of us would choose or not choose to go to a school because of the cafeteria anyway. Really most of these things aren't things I would jot down at an interview... mainly I just wanted to know about transit to the city and some general opinions on the programs.

That's interesting, I've never even paid attention to the ceiling... But I sure know that my 6'4" friends are far from it.

They are buying all new chairs for the cafeteria and putting new chairs in all the lecture halls. Basically, they were waiting for Drexel to officially buy the building from Tenet to do major repairs.

i have no complaints about the cafeteria. The ceiling is NOT 6.5 ft. but studyspace is an ongoing issue. Currently, students study in the library or, after class hours, in the study rooms upstairs. We have a library at Hahnemann hospital that is good for studying but to be honest, I study more at home and at Penn Library. I need to be within 100 ft of a coffee machine.
