Hi I would really appreciate any advice on the matter:
I was accepted to NYU and was fully set on going. However, I just received an invite to interview at UB, my state school. Now the obvious choice would be to go with the state school. The thing is not only do I live within commuting distance to NYU with my family, but they have also offered me a scholarship. So NYU actually might come out to be slightly cheaper for me. Should I go to the interview still, especially since it would be after the deposit is due for nyu?

If NYU is going to be cheaper the stick to NYU. The money you spend on the other interview might be a mouths rent or money toward instruments. We all need to start pinching pennies now!

The only gripe I've got with NYU is the debt. If you take out the debt factor, NYU's a good choice.

If NYU is offering you a scholarship, then what's to say you might not get one at UB? That could potentially make UB cheaper.

However, I'd say you have a pretty sweet deal where you are. For me, being close to my family would be great. It's nice that you can save so much on living expenses. You could still go to the UB interview just to see how it goes, but either way, you're in a good position. I'd go if it wasn't too much of a hassle just for the heck of it. You might fall in love with the school and have it be financially comparable. You never know!

I'm with sgv on this one - the price was the only thing forcing me to steer clear of NYU. If the prices were similar, as it sounds they might be in your case, i would have spent many more hours pouring over the pros/cons list.

When you take price out of the equation, things like location, class size, externship and specialization opportunities, faculty/student body "vibe", technology and clinic appearance, etc. become far more valid considerations when comparing two schools. For a few of those factors, UB and NYU are miles apart. To me, there's no question that NYC is a superior place to live, but would you really get the most out of it living at home? In terms of class size, NYU's class is over triple that of UB - I'm not sure how this really affects things like student body cohesiveness and personalized education, but it's another thing to consider. Both NYU and UB have many specialties in house, so I think your opportunity to be exposed to those is similar in both instances. There's also the general "feel" you get when you're at the school for interview day, which is a lot harder to quantify and compare, but you'll never experience if you don't attend the UB interview.

Are you in NYS now and do you have a car to drive out to buffalo? If so, it seems worth the $300 in gas, food, and hotel to see what UB has to offer.
