Just checked email and found out that I got an interview at Harvard Med School....unexpected since getting only 26MCAT

It is kind of late in the admission cycle at Harvard since I heard that they will send out the acceptance letters in late Feb. I don't know how much chance I do have and if I should go there for an interview. (my budget is too tight!)

Also, any advice on the interview will be appreciated.

😎

You're kidding, right?

Dude, I will bend you over and smack your backside silly if you don't go! You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain from arguably the best medical school in the country!

Show some leg and hitchhike your way to Boston, sleep overnight under the adcom secretary's desk, sell your soul to the devil...whatever you do, get your 26 MCAT butt to that interview. If not you'll always wonder.

congrats on the harvard interview!!!

do you think you'd go to harvard if you were accepted?

if you think you would, you should definitely go to the interview...

i know what you're saying about the tight budget though...

It's all about whether you'd go if you were accepted.

good luck!

um.......YES
can't believe someone would put up a thread asking "should i go to my harvard interivew"

Thanks you guys,
I will squeeze in my tight budget for this interview ( my 6th).
I would definitely go there if I got accepted.

Any tips or adive on the interview at Harvard?

Thanks,

Hi Bunny

Congrats on your interview. A tip would be to understand your research project if you did any and just be prepared to talk about your extra-curric activities. The interview is pretty laid back so don't worry about it...oh, and make sure you bring a jacket. Boston is kinda cold.

You have to go...if you don't, the "what if" will haunt you for the rest of your life. Sorry, but you just gotta do this.

wow, yes definately go! everyone said to prepare for research questions, but i didnt really get many of those. not in great detail at least. my student interview had some in depth questions on morality issues, but none of it was that difficult. it was more a discussion between the two of us. i didnt do it myself, but be sure to check out the student hosting program. it will definately save on costs. be sure and check out the art museum. its within walking distance of the med school. hint...if you get there after four they will let you in for free. 😉 although it would be impossible to see everything in that short time period.
As for it being late in the admission cycle, actually i believe that could be to your advantage since harvard is non-rolling admissions.
anyway, good luck! 🙂

Thanks for the encouragement. I will definitely go for the interview.

Kovok, I had more than 3 yrs of Res., so like you said I should prep for the questions one my Res.

Do you think staying with student host really helpful? If not, I will stay with my friend who is studying for Pharm in Boston, and I will take a T line to Harvard Med School.

Thanks again

Hrm, I had 5 years of research experience and papers published on my research so I guess most of my interview questions was on that.

Staying with the host could be helpful, they're really sweet people. You'll get an opportunity to see what the students are like and you could ask them about the school, what they like, dislike etc. My student host gave me interview tips and a heads up on possible interview questions.

OHHHHHHHH, if you get the chance, go to a place called
"South of the Border." It is in Harvard square, right beneath the cyber cafe. They have the best chips. It is so good.... Anyways, if you get the chance, check out COOP, its a bookstore for Harvard/MIT students. It is very, very huge and has several levels.

And if you're interested, you can visit the Harvard Law building which is pretty close to Harvard Square.

Good Luck!!!

You must have a remarkable way with words....as well as an extremely compelling list of motivations to become a physician. Mind sharing? Where else did you interview?

Isn't it called "Border Cafe"?

You're right. It is called border cafe, and I wouldn't go there if I were you. The food stinks and the wait is ridiculous. If you show up around 7, you'll probably have to wait outside on Church St. in the cold. Sux. Plus, Harvard Square is a bit far from the Medical Campus. You should go to Chili's or Flingers. Or better yet, Chachski's. I hear the Pizza Shooters are good there.

I reccomend South of the Border, which you can find on I-95 on the South Carolina side of the NC/SC state line. The microwave burritos are fabulous!

i think the food is pretty good, though i must admit i've only had the fajitas. the margaritas are tasty! the wait does suck sometimes, especially if you're there on a weekend.

there's a really good thai restaurant fairly close to hms (but a little out of the way). it's called brown sugar cafe.

Yeah. Right off of the fens. That's a good one. Reasonably priced too. go there instead!

I stand by my assertion that the border cafe stinks. The margaritas are good if you've consumed 8 or so.

I have been in Harvard Square before and already checked out the Chili's. It was great. This time, I will check out the Border Cafe and Pizza Shooters, (Yummy!) Thanks.

No pal. Go to Brown Sugar on Jersey Street. You'll pay less and feel better. And it's much closer to HMS. Unless you're Thai of course, then eat whatever the hell you want.

what's that burger place in harvard square called? the one on mass ave with the funky decor. they make some tasty burgers -- you've got to be in the mood for grease, though.

where are flingers and chackski's?

Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage.

They don't exist. they're the names of irritating chain restaurants from the movie Office Space.

Congratulations on your accomplishments, Bunny. And congrats on the interview invitation. Are you applying for New Pathway or HST? Either way, interviews here tend to be very laid back. Last year I got asked about my research in some detail in the HST interviews and just a bit in the New Pathway interviews. However, since you have published in those great journals, I'm sure they'll ask you. But then you should have no problem talking about that. The interviews would be pretty much like those at other schools. Just relax, show some passion in whatever you are doing or want to do with your life, and enjoy the experience.

Stay with a student host if you could. No hassle taking the T to the school on the day of the interview. Our student dormitory is conveniently across the street from the school.

The medical area is a pretty boring social place. There's nothing but hospitals, research labs, medical institutes. If you have some free time, catch the M2 shuttle to Harvard Square, which is about 30 minutes away by bus. Harvard Square is a charming, vibrant place, especially on a not-so-cold weekend night when street musicians show off their skills and young people swamp the sidewalks. Visit the Harvard Coop if you want to see what a tourist trap is like. But visit Wordsworth for the best bookstore in the area. (There are about 5-6 bookstores in Harvard Square.)

If you're at the Square, try Penang for some extremely delicious Malaysian food or Spice for good Thai dishes. The best place at the Longwood medical area is probably Brown Sugar.

Walk around Harvard Yard if you have some time. That place is pretty amazing when you think of all the people that have walked across it for hundreds of years.

Bring the warmest jacket you have. I was just outside just a few minutes ago, and it was 5 degrees F!!!

Congrats again. I hope that you'll enjoy your short time here and that you'll get into the school of your choice.
