Hello! I am still deciding whether or not I want to minor in something. A lot of my friends have been telling me that grad schools *want* you to minor in something. Is this true? Would minoring in something increase my chances of getting accepted into PT programs like NYU, UF, UM, Columbia, etc?
Also, if you minored in something, what did you minor in?

No.

Remember this rule when evaluating advice regarding pre-PT:
Direct conversation with admissions office at the school > school's website > SDN > PTs who applied years ago >>> Undergrad counsellors/pre-health advisors >>>> friends and family (unless your friend or relative is on an adcoms at a PT school

Not likely. I suppose you could call those schools and ask if it made you feel better.

There are a handful of schools that are starting to evaluate the academic rigor of your schedule as minor part of the application process, but for the most part the pre reqs are the only classes that specifically matter.

No. I had that exact same mentality. I double minored in Biology and Psychology. Granted, I was accepted in PT school but I was never once asked about my minors. If you only have to take an extra class and its not too much time-wise/financially then go for it.... otherwise don't even bother with it.

It really doesn't help. They care about GPA (cumulative and pre req), GRE scores, shadowing hours, and letters of recommendation. Focus on getting as high of a GPA as you can and they won't care if you minored in something. The only way it would help is if you have a lower GPA/GRE scores and wanted to show diversity. Other than that, just focus on getting A's in your pre reqs and getting "experience" via jobs/internships/shadowing

I picked up a psychology minor just because it's a subject I'm interested in (particularly the biological/health side). I doubt it helped me get into PT school, but it has helped me understand the psychological side of health, recovery, and rehabilitation that is becoming increasingly important in the medical field.

If you want to minor, pick one for your own benefit and not as a means to an end.

i majored in kinesiology and minor in bio. The only reason i minored in bio was because i was able to coordinate a lot of the pre req courses with my minor, so i didn't have to take any classes that didn't count toward my degree
