I'm debating whether or not to put some of my interests down on for my apps, but my family is saying it's not appropriate. Some include:

-Target shooting
-dirt bikes/ off road trucks
-street motorcycle riding
-motorcycle camping

Are these no bueno when it comes to med school apps?

Curious to know about this: I enjoy target shooting and riding my street motorcycle as well.

Lol, I don't think anyone cares what kind of bikes or trucks you like. Any hobbies you put you want to make it sound interesting. Usually the people who put hobbies have some sort of accomplishment associated with it. Like winning an award for creative writing or being a highly ranked chess player.

If it's a hobby that doesnt make you look crazy, then put it in the hobbies section of your resume. Could make for fun conversation in the interview - the interviewers typically love to see the "human/casual/non-doc" side of you. It's not an "experience" otherwise though.

Lots of secondaries have questions about hobbies, I would save them for those and for interviews when they ask (usually they do). They like to hear you have hobbies outside shadowing, studying, work.

Definitely put some hobbies in work/activities section. No one likes an automaton. Your patients won't be automatons, your colleagues aren't automatons. Don't be a medical automaton.

If it's going to be interesting to an interviewer and not make you look like a psychopath ( motorcycle camping? What is that) it may make you more interesting.

If you want to include a hobby in your activities section, go for it. Just don't go crazy and list like 10 things. Pick one interesting thing, especially if you accomplished something in regards to your hobby (example: your hobby is running and you qualified for the Boston marathon).

I'm a diver, and I listed diving. No accomplishments past being advanced certified. I got questions about it. Just be able to relate anything you do to medicine.

Say like:

-First aid officer for target shooting club, etc
-first responder for XYZ

Awesome, so i'll include them but not until 2nd apps or resume, thanks
