I have an interview coming up at KCOM and starting to wonder if I should cancell the appoint ment. I have already been accepted to DCOM and KCUMB, and waiting to hear from DMU. Both DMU and KCUMB were in my top choices when I started looking at DO schools and began the application process. I have never visited Kirksville, but was impressed by the things people said about the school. However from what I have read, DMU, KCUMB, and KCOM all produce great physicians. So I really don't know if there is a huge difference between the schools except for minor things here and there. DMU is really my number one choice and I should be hearing back next week. Should I just cancell my interview since I already have an acceptance to KCUMB which I ranked higher than KCOM when I began applying?

Will it cost a lot of money for you to go to the Kirksville interview? If not, then it might be good to keep your options open. KCOM certainly isn't for everybody, but it was my favorite interview day out of all the interviews I went on.
Maybe you could wait to cancel your interview until after you have heard from DMU.

bad place to go. the local college, truman state is huge... and no one up there even knows about kcom. this is a forgotten school.

Ignorance is bliss

Depending on costs, etc. I am pretty sure I would go to the interview. All of the schools on my list shifted around after I went for interviews. What I thought would be my top choice went down to 5th. KCOM moved up to first. You'll never know if you don't check it out. I like options myself, but if the ignorance is bliss thing works for you, that's great. Good luck, and if you have any KCOM specific questions, feel free to pm me.

I know it's sacrilegious to turn down interviews, but what's the point of interviewing when you know you probably won't go there? I can see interviewing as practice for where you really want to go, but in your case, i'm not sure if its' worth the money and the trouble to go through it.

Schools really change on people's lists after interviewing there - at least I've found a lot of that. If it isn't really expensive, go - and go with an open mind. You never know if they'll blow you away or not until you actually go!

what is the most efficient way to get to kirksville?

Probably to fly into KC, then take 35N to Cameron and then 36E over to the road that goes north to Kirksville.

so its best to rent a car then eh? any reccomendation on hotels?

I found the cheapest way was to fly into Quincy Illinois. It is 1 hour to Kirksville and I had a car for $50.

I interviewed there a couple years ago after I already had an acceptance to DMU & wish I wouldn't have. It was a complete waste of time & money (only 3 hours) for gas. I hated the town & the school was pretty much a forgotten wasteland as someone else mentioned.

KCOM wasn't for me either, but I wouldn't go so far to say that the school is a wasteland. They have reasonable technology, the staff seemed to have the students' best interest in mind, and they are building a brand new building for the fall of 2007. Different strokes for different folks.

Don't want to hijack the thread, just trying to help a little so don't put me before the firing squad....

I'm from the area, and Quincy, IL is not 1 hour to Kirksville. 2-2.5 Hours is more accurate. Pretty much 2 lane highway the whole way. This is coming from a guy who likes to drive fast.

I applied and interviewed at KCUMB and KCOM and was accepted, but I kept hearing so many great things about DMU. From what I could gather (I didnt actually visit DMU) DMU has many of the things that make KCOM great but with the added benefits of an actual town surrounding it.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I did not end up going to my interview. Thinking about it, I got into one of my top schools and I am waiting for my #1 (which I hope will be good news). I had no clue how strong of an applicant I would be when I started applying and now that I have a few choices I realized that KCOM would not be the best fit for me. No sense in wasting 6hrs in a car and $70 on gas.

is anyone interviewing feb 22nd?

The way I see it, you should cancel if you already know for a fact you would rather go to KCUMB or DCOM. It will save you time and precious money, but will also give another applicant a chance they may not have had previously to interview there.

For example, I interviewed at Wayne State, accepted at MSUCOM (w/o interview) and had interview dates at CCOM and DMU. I knew that when I took into consideration the instate tuition for Wayne and MSU they beat out CCOM and DMU with any competition, so I canceled those interviews, hoping that 2 more applicants stood a chance at attaining what we have all worked so hard for.
