Should I leave school? If so what are the chances of getting into dental school.

Hello all.

I have a pretty gruesome decision to make. I am debating on whether to keep on pursuing school or withdraw from all of my classes and hopefully come back next year.

I am currently a junior in college pursuing dentistry. Recently my mother tried to commit suicide and all have gone down hill from there. I am the oldest of 3 and because my siblings are still young, I need to leave to take care of them and help the family.

I am wondering how much it would hurt my chances of getting into dental school. Because I know how bad W's looks on transcript but I think I have to withdraw due to the family issue that's going on now in the family.

Thank you.

In my opinion, family > dentistry.
If you can stay in school, then it is obviously the better choice. However, sometimes it is not and is not the worse thing in the world. When it comes for time to apply, just tell ADCOMS and put it in the application why you withdrew and took a year off (what you are telling us now) and with competitive scores (DATs + GPA) a year off with a valid reason should not hold you back.

Good luck with everything, hopefully it all works out in the end.

Sorry about the bad news. However, you can use this to your advantage in writing a great personal statement.

withdraw.... better to have a semester withdrawn with a reasonable excuse versus having a 2.0 that semester with a reasonable excuse.

I am in a family of 5 children. My sister suffers from schizophrenia and my mother suffers from depression/anxiety. In my junior year of undergrad, my younger sister tried committing suicide multiple times and drop out of high school. She wanted to run away from home. My grades went down the hill. I spent several days with her in psychiatric hospitals and other counseling sessions. I helped her get through with GED and now she is attending community college.

I don't think anyone will hold it against you if you leave school.... you are going through a tough time. IMO, its totally understandable for you to take time off and take care of your family

all the best
