Should I let the more expensive school know I have cheaper option, to leverage for scholarship?

Hey guys,

So im stuck between a more expensive/less prestigious private school and a cheaper more prestigious state school. I really would rather go to the private school but cant seem to shake the money difference. I know the private school offers academic scholarships (rarely) and I have a AA=25, 4.0 and good personal experiences, so I think im definitely eligible. Do you think it would be a bad/good idea to inform the private school of my acceptance to the rival state school and say I'm honestly stuck in my decision due to financial troubles but say I really want to come there (private school). And then ask if there is any chance I could receive a merit based scholarship to make decision that much more definite?

Bad idea or worth the shot/no harm?
Really would appreciate the feedback

definitely cannot hurt. go ahead and ask

Absolutely. Go for it.

But I would really rather you go to the cheaper option and so would many others on this forum. Any reason why do did not go hands down with your state school?

What if the head takes it the wrong way and revokes my acceptance? In like a " I cant believe your having trouble choosing between our school and theirs"....or is that not likely

I just know I wouldnt be happy at the state school for personal reasons: location, distance, class size, med based, etc.

as long as you are polite about it, there's no reason they would revoke your acceptance.

what @cacazor said is right, being polite and asking for a scholarship could help your case rather than holding acceptance hostage for a scholarship. As many of the letters of acceptance says "We are delight to extend our offer of admission", the school holds the right to choose candidates for their schools, they can give it and they can take it back. So keep that in mind. The best to you. ^^

I agree but this private school is under the impression I only got into their program (was asked during interview if I was accepted anywhere else and I said no, interviewer took note) I feel like if I don't mention I have another option to consider, they won't see anything to lose.

Do you think just asking for a scholarship would be better than the route I suggested in beginning of my thread?

I would inquire specifically about scholarship opportunities to tip the hint, not ask what theyre willing to offer you. But I don't know what sort of scholarships they DO offer (do you?), because if theyre not all that into giving scholarships, especially being a private school, I'm not sure they'll take a liking to what to them would sound like an ultimatum. Also schools are aware that you don't fill their spot, someone else gladly will without the scholarship
