As long as you get good grades and get all your pre reqs taken care of I don't think choosing that major will in any way hinder your chances of getting into dental school. My dental school classmates have extremely varied undergrad experiences/educations and I think getting experience outside of the science/premed/predental track is a good thing.

On the other hand, is this something you're really passionate about or is this something your considering because you think it might not be too much work, but still kind of interesting? What happens if you change your mind about dental school and decide to take another career path? Will your experiences pursuing this major or the major itself be an asset to you in that other career or are you just getting a degree so you can check a box and say you're a college grad.

You're going to spend a decent amount of time and money on undergrad. Make sure that it is put towards something that YOU consider valuable and worthwhile.

My thoughts bolded.

Okay so this is why I'm thinking about it...

This spring semester will be my last semester before I transfer up to University of Hawaii at Hilo with a Liberal Arts Degree. I'm thinking about making Hawaiian studies my major because I took a Hawaiian studies class my fall semester, and it was probably the only subject where I felt like a complete idiot.

I want to differentiate myself from the majority of dental applicants and challenge myself at the same time. Also, I feel like it will take me out of my academic comfort zone.
Your major will be the smallest part that will make you different from other applicants. Don't forget to differentiate between an applicant with unique major and a strong applicant. I would not choose Hawaiian study just because you think it's hard. Think if majoring in Hawaiian study will: lower your GPA, finish your prereq on time, enjoy it. Don't choose your major just because of your ego. If your goal is to get into dental school, strategize well to make yourself a good candidate as possible.
One more note, the tuition here at UHH really isn't all that much and I also get the full pell grant. Plus I live with my step dad and I don't have any bills nor have I accumulated any debt so far.

I feel mixed about making this move when I transfer because I could be making the biggest mistake in my life :confused

It's great that you want to be academically challenged. Other way to become academically challenged is to: increase courseload, increase amount of shadowing/volunteer/job hours, do research, etc. If

Your voice of reason has appealed to me, thank you for your advice 🙂

Also the town I live in is sort of a rural town, therefore opportunities to shadow, volunteer, or even getting a job are pretty limited 🙁

Any advice for me on that aspect?

Be creative start a dental group, and if it is that small, try to do something through the Internet .

For some reason I can't find anyone who wants to be a dentist like me in Hilo 😕

And what do you mean by start something through the internet?

Internet maybe a website related to dentistry and its branches as a learning center.

Do research. This will help you in many ways plus if you have a well written research paper with proper references clinically or through the books maybe it can be published.

Go to your local hospital and go to the dental dept. medical surgeons are somewhat similar to oral surgeons.

Look into dental laboratories.

You'll need a certain amount of shadowing hours, so you'll need to find at least one dentist for this. Schools have different hour requirements. It also helps to make sure you know that you want to do this profession for sure.

EC activities in leadership and showing you're involved with something are more important than finding other people that want be a dentist to start a club.
