Should I not apply this cycle and do an SMP instead?

I want to apply to medical school right now

but I really want to get some more science courses under my belt

I am not a science major, I've been only alright in the sciences

I even got a C in bio had to retake Gen Chem one of the semesters

The only pre-req I did well in was Physics, I think I pulled the highest grade in the class in the first semester, and an A in the second semester

I'm an undergrad in harvard

3.6 GPA with a 3.2 science GPA

I am an art history major/econ minor

I feel pretty confident in my MCAT score, I'll be taking it thursday, anyway I think worst case scenario I score a 30 [which is 3 points lower than any of my AAMCs]

My fear is I may actually get destroyed in medical school because of my lack of science familiarity

I had to study my ass off for the MCAT to get my scores to where they are now especially because I was never a science person. I was more of a math person than a science one. More of a history/english person actually

I also had to cram in all my pre-reqs because I didn't go college planning on going to medical school

I also wouldn't be taking Biochem [I'll be becoming a senior] because I have to retake that bio class and take Orgo II in the spring.

Would it be in my best interest to try out an SMP to get a better handling on taking science classes before jumping into the real thing

I am kind of looking at top medical schools as well

What do you guys think

SMPs are more for people with strong MCAT scores, and poor GPAs. Your GPA is good, but your sGPA needs some work, and you don't have many science courses completed, so you simply need to get more undergraduate-level science courses in, and do well in them. You would be very late to apply this cycle, since you haven't even taken the MCAT yet, so do NOT apply this cycle. If you do, you will most likely be wasting your money since you are applying so late, unless you are applying DO. Take as many upper-level sciences as you can and still get As in all of them, and apply EARLY next cycle (meaning submit the first day it is open if at all possible). A 3.2 sGPA is quite low, so getting in more science courses is your best bet. :luck:

ETA: top med schools expect MCAT scores in the mid 30's or higher, plus GPAs in the 3.7+ (both science and cumulative), and amazing ECs to boot. Ask yourself if you want to be a doctor, or if you want to go to a top med school, as the former is probably one cycle away, while the latter will likely take years of work, if you can get there at all.
