My plan is to go to medical school. I just finished my first semester of college and I am very unhappy with the results... this is what I got:
Chemistry 201: A
FSP: A
(Themes in Biology) Biology 185: B-
Calc A: B-
Final gpa: 3.35 <--I wanted at the very least a 3.6...

I would have gotten a regular B in bio, but I messed up on the final and ended up with a B-. In Calc A, I happened to get the worst teacher in the school. I would have gotten a B+ after all the torture, but I failed an exam so I got a B-, but got a 100 on the final. (or very close to it, because he didn't give the grade for the final out yet, just for the course. I know i got close to it because I needed close to a 100 on the final just to get a B-)

I know that I just gotta pick myself up next semester, but it's really hard because I never had this low of a gpa and I feel like I got screwed over in Calc and Bio. Should I retake Bio and Calc over the summer and try to get an A? or should I not even worry this much about it...

Don't retake. Re-evaluate your study habits and get a good grade in bio 2. Med schools want to see an upward trend!

In calculus 2, I received a C- because my professor was a student himself. I was rather willing to stick to the class than get a W. I retook the class even when knowing that the C- will show on my transcript when applying to med schools. Why? Because I knew that I was far more capable of that. I did it for myself, and got an A. (I am sharing this because even when we know that we are capable of doing excellent, something will one day or another bite us in the back and we must be prepared to move forward.)

In your situation: you are doing just fine. Do not waste your time retaking those classes. Do better in your next semester! Best of luck!

A B- isn't low enough to retake, IMO. Just do better in your subsequent classes. Those aren't bad grades for your first semester 😀 as you get used to college, you'll do better!

Are you guys saying you wouldn't want to retake it because its inconvenient? Because I will retake them happily. Or are you guys saying not to retake because it won't make much of a difference to my gpa by the end of my college career?

Both. Remember that AMCAS will average the two grades (for MD, DO will do flat out grade replacement), so in the long run it really won't make much of a difference. IMO it really isn't worth the extra time and effort. Just beast the rest of your classes and you're golden.

Not because its inconvenient but its not worth it. I'd say work on future courses and spend your summer doing something more worthwhile like volunteering or getting clinical experience. A B- is not bad.
