Hey guys, quick question about retaking certain classes.

I am a junior with a 3.4 GPA, haven't taken the DAT yet.

This semester, I landed a C- in Cell Bio. I'm usually a solid A/B student, with only one other C (C+ in micro).

Most threads on here have people asking if they should retake classes like chem or orgo. I'm wondering if it's worth retaking a class that isn't a prereq in order to boost my sGPA and overall GPA.

My university completely replaces the old grade with the new one (although I believe the old one still stays on the transcript), so if I got an A it would be a 4.0 instead of a 1.whatever....yuck.

What do you guys think? Should I give it a shot retaking it or is it pointless? (I know next semester would be a way better professor teaching the course as well.....one of the main reasons I did so poorly this time around). How would dental schools feel about seeing that I retook it?

Also, how does that C+ in micro look? Should I consider running through that again as well?

Thanks for the input!

It won't replace your grade on your transcript to dental schools. They still factor in that c-, having said that I wouldn't retake it.

Does everyone else agree that a non prereq C- isn't anything to worry about?

Ehh. People tend to view things differently. I think it depends on how neurotic an individual is about their grades. I stressed about having two Ws while others say it's not a big deal. Point is, I wish I hadn't. Same deal with C-. I wouldn't stress about it. I honestly think you should just move on. Question, is that your GPA without doing any course retakes? If so, move on. 3.4 is solid and I wouldn't stress. We are people. People can't be perfect at all times and adcoms know this. If your transcript showed a bunch of semesters getting Cs, C-, D, etc then I would be offering your different advice. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice man!

Yeah my 3.4 is without any retakes at all. Last semester I got a C+ and 3 As, and this semester I will be getting a C-, 2Bs and an A. Not the greatest year but not the worst either. Also, this year really put things in perspective and I will be trying my damn hardest to 4.0 both semesters next year before I apply.

So overall, I only have 2 Cs, and a whole mess of As and Bs. I guess I'm just stressing because the Cs aren't common at all and they strike me just as your Ws did to you. I'm lucky that neither class was a dental school requirement, just a degree requirement.

I think a good plan to have would be: if for some reason I don't get any interviews/acceptances after the first cycle, maybe then retake them?

That's good then man. Glad I could help. Yeah definitely just move on. If for instance you don't get any interviews then I would personally call the schools and see what's up with your application. We are in a similar boat with that. It sucks when you have a discrepancy because it kills you inside lol. I'm neurotic about my grades so that's moreso why.
