Got A's/A-'s in the organic chem classes but got a C- (the only C on the transcript) in my second quarter of organic chem lab. My chem lab classes in general have been pretty weak (B's/B-'s i think). I'm a bioengineer with a 3.513 and a 35 on the mcat. Is C- even passing? and should i retake or forget about it?

I believe you need to have a 'C' or better in every prereq

Anything below a C (that is, C- and less) doesn't count.

Retake and stomp it.

f* organic lab. I swear it was like clinicals... it was just as much political (how much the lab instructor liked you) as it was merit-based. I broke a beaker the first lab and my lab instructor automatically labeled me the class-****** (it just so happens I WAS the class ******, but that's besides the point, hehe) and I swear he putting a ceiling on my lab-notebook and performance grades. I hated that class. If they'd of just given us a little more time to do the experiments, it would have been so much more enriching. Sigh... at least that was my experience.

I liked our organic lab... (I think you were my year in orgo.. or did you take it over summer?).. Though it does kind of suck that they built a new lab the year after we took it... I'd say the experience would have been more enriching if it weren't a constant threat to our wellbeing 🙄

(for those of you missing out, see: http://www.phdcomics.com/comics.php?f=1023)

You weren't in the postbacc lab, were you? Sigh. I just remembered, that was what is was... those damn postbaccs that made it suck! I remember seeing the undergrad kids getting hammered on beers outside of White-Gravenor and then walking into Orgo lab. Woulda been much cooler to have been in that one. Haha.

Awesome link, by the way! 🙂

Yea I actually did the Sat lab both semesters... but you may have been the other Sat session. I always thought it was easier to do labs on Saturdays (and not have the reports due during the week). And yea, the ugrads labs were either really lax or super intense... I didn't want to take my chance with the latter. It was against my anti-orgo-gunner policy 😉

Our lab instructor forced us to turn in our lab reports BEFORE we left lab!!!

I feel your pain man. For some reason, only orgo lab I always found a way to ef up. I would either break something, put too much of one compound in there, or have some water leak in to my friedel crafts ( I think that's what it's called, been a while). I'm glad that hell is over with though.

Yep. haha. Although, to be fair, part of my weakness was my creativity (honestly: "******ation"). Sometimes I'd use ice to cool things "faster" when it specifically said "Use water!!!"

hehe

Lol. Just wondering, and this question goes out to all people, has anyone ever messed up so bad that they had to copy someone else's data? For instance, for day one of our three day lab, we had to make some crystals to be used for day 2. Took the whole lab. Day two comes, i leave my crystals on my bench. Lucky me that my bench is next to teh door and someone opens it hard and my crystals fly everywhre. I quickly check to see if the ta saw and lucky for me he didnt. So the rest of the two days I pretedn to work and was fortunate enough to have someone on the hood next to me that would let me copy her notes 🙂 Ftw

Ha. Similar thing happened to me... My product was obviously CRAP... it was gray, when it was supposed to be white. My lab neighbor, also my best friend and roommate at the time, had the most pearly white flakes... and way more of it... So, he sprinkled some. 🙂

I've got a similar question...

I took Organic Lab post-bac and was in a totally busch league lab group. One of my partners was a local goat farmer who needed a D or better in the course to request a raise at the farm.

SO I got a B- in it. Upon speaking to the professor he agreed I got sandbagged and, being one of my LOR authors, agreed to mention this and explain the circumtances surrounding the grade/my proficiency in the Lab. Should I retake this painful, awful, time consuming course or just continue to rock out at the Hospital I work at and firebomb the MCAT?
