I recently graduated with a B.S in Chemical Engineering and a 2.6 GPA. Clearly, my grades don't make me very competitive applicant. I really didn't consider optometry school until my fourth year and by then it was already too late to do anything to improve my grades Although I still have a few more pre-req classes to take, I doubt it's going to raise my GPA very much. I'm planning to study my butt off for the OAT to offset that but in addition to that, do you think I should re-take some of my pre-req classes to raise my GPA even more? Another question I have is if I re-take those courses at a different institution, will it still overwrite my initial grades? My biggest concern with that is cost of retaking those classes which is going to cost me over $350 per unit. So absolutely have to, I don't want to re-take any classes.

If you retake the classes at a different institute the optomcas will average them together. If you take them at the same place they will replace it outright.
I would retake classes if you have a C in them or lower as most schools won't take anything lower than a C. Your goal should be to retake classes that will benefit you academically and will also bring up your gpa. A 2.6 is low but with some planning you could bring it up.

Thank you so much for responding!

Would you happen to know which schools accept community college credits? To my knowledge, SCCO and Berkeley won't hold it against me but I'm not too sure about the other schools.

I took some of mine at community and I was fine. I would ask the specific school for clarification though.
