I start medical school in Late July and was wondering if I should start thinking of study strategies.

Should I start reaching out to students and seeing what they do to study?

I have heard that this is inadvisable because you do not know how medical school is going to be until you get there.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

No. Every step will be this new cluster**** you just can’t prepare for. Just chill while you can.

It’s not terribly useful knowing how other people study. I had to bust it almost everyday the first two years to do well. Then there’s people who did better than me just blowing it off and cramming the week before an exam. So reaching out now is possibly going to result in getting advice incompatible with what you need.

I would suggest doing what best works FOR YOU. Be prepared to filter out all kinds of student’s advice because everyone is going to try and pull you in many directions. I personally did old school study techniques for the first 2 years which worked out great, but for boards, Anki and practice questions. So just figure out what works best for you and be prepared to put in work if you want results.

I definitely wish I knew how to use anki going in.

sure, but just realize what you plan out right now might get thrown out one week into med school. Most of my friends had to re-learn how to learn/study during the first year and arguably into the second year as well.

If I were you, I'd just not think about med school and enjoy your last bit for freedom before school starts.

First year in general, but first semester especially, is just as much about getting a foundation as it is learning how to study. You have to be prepared to study differently for different courses/topics and constantly adapt throughout medical school. As someone above said, your plans can change as quickly as one week into school or the next block. Enjoy the time off you have now as it likely won't come again for quite some time.
