Hey guys, should I submit my AMCAS application after getting the April MCAT scores back? I ask because I'm not sure if I will have to retake it. If I do indeed have to retake it, how can I let the med school know that I'm retaking it? Thanks!

Submit after getting your MCAT scores so you can decide what schools you need to apply to. You only have to wait around 2 weeks to get your MCAT score once it hits June 1st. Submitting your AMCAS in late June is still considered early.

Wait for the April scores. It is just the August MCATers who need to submit before seeing their scores. But definitely work on the PS and other portions of the app so you can submit rapidly once you see that your scores are adequate. At any rate, if you are going to retake, there is a box on the app you check indicating that you are taking it in August.

Same sort of situation, slightly different. One of my friends took the MCAT 2 years ago, and it going to retake it in August. His old MCAT score definitely won't get him anywhere, his hope is that the retake will be much better. So the question is, should he wait until he gets his august scores before he submits AMCAS? (Will they see his old score and reject him right away?)

He should not wait until August scores come out. He should have his primary and secondaries done by then. Submitting in June is fine because there is a box he can check to indicate he will be retaking in August. Schools should not reject him based on only his old scores if he checks this box.

Similar question - I took the MCAT in 2003, so this cycle my scores are out of date for most schools. However, if I submit my AMCAS before the April MCAT scores come out, schools may only see the 2003 score. There isn't anywhere to indicate whether or not you took the April, so will schools assume I took the April since my 2003 scores are old? Would there be any harm in submitting early? I'm getting married this June and so wedding planning, work & applications consume my life....

I am fairly certain that the MCAT score will automatically be uploaded to your application once the scores are in. The only reason there is a checkbox for the Aug MCAT is so the med schools don’t look at your application (or make a decision on it) until they have the Aug score. You have nothing to worry about since NO med school will be making decisions before the April scores are in. So feel free to submit.

👍

Amcas doesn't even SEND info to schools until after April scores are out.

Yeah, most schools will hold your completed apps/secondaries until they get August scores in October... you will most likely get late interviews though... prob in Jan-March... that is what happened to me! But this applies to August MCAT only...

The main thing is to sort of tier the schools you're going to apply to:

1. Schools you will apply to regardless of your MCAT score, submit as soon as possible even before scores are in, it'll get the paperwork going.
2. Schools you will apply to if you do well enough to please you.
3. Schools you will apply to if you hit a certain dream score, but that you would not retake the MCAT for if you hit #2, save you money if you don't hit that score.

I hope that wasn't confusing, I realize my constuction of prepositional phrases was pretty appalling. I hate it when I do that.

Hey everyone, thanks for the info...now I know what to do.

Another question:

I have a friend with ~3.7, 29 mcat, and good extracurriculars.
She's planning on retaking the MCAT in August.

When should she submit her AMCAS?

I was thinking normal/early time in June. Am I right?

👍 They will wait for his August MCAT scores before reviewing his application or rendering a decision.

Right. Submit it early and select that she's taking the August MCATs. Do her primary and secondary applications in the meanwhile. That way, when her August scores come out in mid October, med schools will be prepared to review her application package right away.
