Hi

UC Davis is my last secondary and I am very unsure if I should spend more money, since it is tight.

I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about davis, and what makes it a good school, if there any students that go there right now, how do you like it, the program, the city, and anything else that may help me make a decision.

I am quite unsure if i should even start those 9 essays, i wanted to know also if any acceptees or anyone here can give me a good word of advice

so should i send in secondary and why?

please help!
thanks a bunch😕

don't fill it out, and maybe they'll invite me for an interview 😀 😛

all med schools need more radiohead fans so apply.

now on a more comical manner ill just say what i thought about the school when i went on my interview.

are you interested in primary care? well say no more...davis is one of the top schools in the nation when it comes to primary care education.

dont feel like getting jipped for research opportunities? well not to worry. tho it may not be a top research school, they are doing what they can in increasing its research capacities. moving up the us news rankings for whatever thats worth. just built a new genomics building and the faculty seems helpful and supportive on helping interested students find research opps. this is just what i sensed. a student can prolly verify this.

so you heard davis is a cow-town? well there is a small area next to the davis med school campus with some of those lovely bovine animals. the smell isnt really strong unless there is a strong breeze. but thanks to sensory adaptation you wont even notice it after a week. the actual city is decent with a quaint downtown. its quiet and ideal for a place to be a medical student.

worried about not having anything fun to do? on the contrary. davis is in an ideal location. you can get to sf, berkeley under an hour. south lake tahoe is no more than 2 hours away. sacramento is no more than 30 minutes away. sanjose, sunnyvale, palo alot etc... are also about 90 minutes away.

how are the 3rd and 4th years? well you are in for a treat. the medical center at sacramento is amazing. hospitals left and right. tertiary center so you will be exposed to everything. thinking about peds like i am? well shriners and davis children hospital are there for your pleasure.

dont feel like going to med school with overcompetitive fools? the student body, administration and faculty are all excellent and friendly and supportive. my friends and i know a good number people at davis and it seems like they dont ever want to leave since they like it there so much. obviously since i never went to davis prior to the interview i was confused at why this was so but after visiting i think i am beginning to understand why.

worried about housing? davis is very reasonable. you can prolly get your own room for about 400 dollars in a 3 bedroom apt with 2 other roommates of course. from what the med students tell me sacramento housing is even cheaper than davis. sweeeet.

its one of the cheaper secondaries and the essays arent that bad. you might even learn something about yourself as an applicant as you do this. if i missed anything go ahead and ask.

good luck deciding.

Wow Jlee, great job! Where were you to convince me back when I still had time? My secondary was 3 months late, so I just went ahead and withdrew. Oh-well.

In addition to all that's already been said about the general fabulousness of Davis, I'll add my $.02 ...

I was admitted to Davis a couple of years ago and ultimately accepted their offer of admission. I later withdrew and am now reapplying (long and painful story), but I was seriously impressed with the administration at Davis during my interaction with them. They were incredibly understanding with me, even granted me a year off despite the fact that I had no job and no plan for what to do with said year.

All that being said, I think if you're a serious city/urban person, Davis might not be the place for you. I hate urban environments, so I was thrilled by the prospect of living in Davis, but other people I've talked with (undergrads there, mostly) have complained pretty bitterly about the lack of nightlife. On the other hand, my interviewer said it was a great place to raise kids, and that's probably true ...

i think if you just sent it in they would have taken it. 🙂

but now i feel bad i let down a cali-girl. its not my style to do that haha. ive definitely gained from your informative posts...but not to worry...ill be up for the task.

have question? will answer.

😀

hey,
I'm not a med student, but I am doing my undergrad at UC Davis. I've lived here for five years so i can tell you a little bit about the area:

JLee had most things nailed on the head:

Davis Campus: Very large, lots of people, med school is located away from main campus and very small, but still really pretty.

Med Student Vibe: Everyone studies at the bazillion coffee shops that Davis has, so they're everywhere. They usually study together and always have smiles on their faces (I'm not kidding). They all seem really happy and content.

UCDMC: BOMB! Dude, it's like the most amazing fast paced hospital in Northern California. JLee was right, you will see everything.

Other hospitals affiliated with UC Davis in the Sacramento Area: UC Davis Children's Hospital, Shriners Hospital, UC Davis Cancer Center... not to mention the Sutter Cancer center and Sutter and Kaiser, which are all close by.

It's not a cow town, I promise. It would be if there wasn't a school there, but since there are so many students, it seems like any other regular city. Weather is okay. Hot summers, cold winters, but no snow! yay!

Okay.. send the damn secondary in and work a couple of extra hours to pay it off 😉

If you have any more questions about the surrounding area or Davis itself, send me a PM
