Should I take an ECOLOGY class ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Eh... No. You should take a science class more relevant to human phys, genetics, anatomy and such. Ecology isn't likely going to benefit you in dental school at all, unless you're just looking for an easy A to boost your GPA.

ecology counts as a "bio" class for the sake of your bcp gpa. i personally find ecology to be interesting, so i'd advise you to take it.

but kitty has a point---classes like physio, anatomy, genetics may be more beneficial to you (especially if you do well). depending on the type of ecology course, it may/may not have some relevance to some science courses you may encounter in dental school.

the choice is yours. if you want an easier gpa boost, ecology is prob the way to go.

i already graduated college, i dont want to waste the Spring semester waiting for interviews.

I want to take some couple science courses to boost my GPA.

I'm taking Physiology and Biochem Lab, only other class I can find is Ecology.

I would, it doesn't seem very difficult...im taking it this semester because its a requirement for my bio degree

Take any upper level bio classes you can...there is a shi* ton of ecology on the DAT for reason, microbial ecology for instance is very relevant to dental studies...

you can't even compare DAT science with the science that you'll have to take in dental school. there's very little overlap. plus you never know what they'll throw at you on the bio section of the DAT.

I'm registering for classes, was wondering if Ecology is a good class to take for Pre-Dental students

Ecology will help you immensely on the DAT if you still had not taken it. I took ecology last semester and loved it. I think your experience with the course is highly dependent upon the instructor. Overall, I would recommend you take the class, as it will give you a broader appreciation toward the field of biology. You will have ample life science courses in dental school, so take ecology now while you still have the chance to.

Does anyone have any idea why Ecology is a subject that is relevant to assess predental students' abilities to perform well in dental school?

I'm only taking Ecology because I'm required to. I'd rather take Immunology or Histology.

Chalk carving is also a much better indicator of manual dexterity than perceptual ability test. The DAT test overall is a rather poor indicator of how well of a practitioner one will become.

but it's a great indicator of how you'll perform on your boards. Sandow et. al submitted an article to the Journal of Dental Education in March of 2002, citing correlation coefficients of 0.507 and 0.433 for the NBDE I and II respectively for DAT Scores. These values were stronger indicators than both Science GPA (0.309 and 0.280) and Non-science GPA (0.185 and 0.194).

you can carve some chalk to make a replica of the statue of david, but if you can't pass your boards (nbde1) then it won't mean much.

edit - and yes, take ecology if you're trying to boost your gpa

👍 . they want to see how well you can take a test so that they can predict if you'll be able to pass the boards. higher dat=higher board scores (well as of late, higher dat=passing the board) . also of note, there is a high correlation b/w RC scores and board performance.

Take it. It counts as a science course so your GPA will increase.
