Should I take Biochem for one school?

I'm working on narrowing down my choices on med schools right now, and I had a question about UC Irvine. I recently completed my bachelor's degree, but did not take biochem, a course which UCI requires. I like UCI primarily because it would allow me to stay in California (and near friends in Orange County), and there aren't any other schools I really want to go to that require biochem.

My question is, should I enroll in an online/postbacc/CC biochem course just to meet the requirement for one school? Or will they allow me to apply on the contingency that I take it next summer if I am accepted? Or should I just drop it altogether?

This is something that I would call the school about. They may not even accept online courses. It would be a waste of time, if they don't accept the class.

I would definitely take the class, if you are that confident you will get in. Plus, taking biochem will prepare you for some of those classes, because I believe biochem is part of some of the first year curriculum.

But, as I said, you should definitely ask a school representative. good luck

Definitely take biochem, but not online. I was dreading taking it too, but once I took it, it tied a lot of my lower division courses together. Things just make a lot more sense now! Haha! It'll be worth it, especially for med school classes.

Plus, you don't want to look back a year from now and think, "You know, I really would've loved to be matriculating at Irvine this fall." Possible regret's not worth it.

If you get into UCI, just take it in the summer prior to matriculation at a CC.

Just to clarify, though... I'm done with school. So to take this class, I would have to go back and specifically take it somewhere, not just add it on top of a semester load. Which also means working around full-time work, etc...

And Koko, do you know of anyone actually doing this (not necessarily at UCI)? It makes sense that that would work, but so many things in this process are weird that I don't want to take that for granted.

Well, taking it online would look really BLAH! Just ask an admissions person about your situation. We don't really have the answers haha!

Understood. Thanks so much for the help!

The rules are that required courses must be completed by matriculation.

If they bother to accept you without biochem, it means that they don't really care about it as long as you take it before you show up.

To answer your question, I don't know anyone personally who has done this. It seems common on SDN, though. To be certain, call UCI like futuradoc says.

I'll have to do that tomorrow, then. Thanks so much for your help!
