I have a BA in Biology and graduate in 1988. I am presently a physical therapist with a desire to go back to medical school. I have all the pre-req but all but 2 (Organic Chem II and Biochemistry) were taken between 1984 and 1988.

My science gpa is 3.65 from that time. My question is, should I retake the pre reqs in preparation for taking the MCAT or should I just take a MCAT prep course???

I remember very little from general biology/zoology, physics I & II, general chem I/II and Organic Chem.

Can the the prep classes get me up to par so I can get a good score on the MCAT??

Anyone else faced or facing these questions?

Anyone have any opinions on examkrackers in preping for the MCAT??

Thank you for you assistance. Sincerely, 123DVT

Future MD/DO- If I were you, I would take a prep class. I took both the Princeton Review and Kaplan and I found Kaplan sooooo helpful! Kaplan does a great job of refreshing your memory and going over exactly what is needed for the MCAT. I hope that this helps! Good Luck!

I would also agree, but I found Princeton review much better.

The test structure is better for Princeton Review.

Good Luck

Thank you SxyDr2be and Doc AdamK for your responses. I am checking into the location of a MCAT prep course. Good luck to you all as well.

Take Princeton Review. I took them both and PR was MUCH better.

Hey FutureMD/DO, I currently live in Mississippi and can give you some insight into the DO route. Where do you live in MS? I have done more research on DOs, as I will be applying this summer. I am also a non-trad student. I am sort of in the same boat as you. Send me a private e-mail at [email protected] and we can talk. Peace Out!

Take a prep course and maybe just sit in on the lectures on subjects which you are having trouble with.

Good Luck. 😀

Sign up as soon as possible. If you sign up early for Kaplan you can get your books and start studying before the class starts so that you have a solid foundation and can concentrate on doing practice problems that help with tricky concepts. In general, the people who do really well are the ones who spend the most time on it. Good Luck.

You may have a problem. Often, credits greater than 10 years old must be retaken. Talk to your premed advisor.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, I am aware of that some of my pre reqs may be outdated, however, there are some schools out there that have no time limit as far as when you took your pre reqs as long as you get a competitive MCAT score. I will focus on those schools for the time being.

I am 38, so I may end up in the carribean. Doesn't bother me to go there at all except for the cost. I have a friend who is at Ross (nurse practitioner) and another who is a MD back home in Florida. It is a means to an end.

I also graduated in 1988 from my undergrad, and am now a first year student at TUCOM. Take the prep course, and do the job experience to get into a school in the states. You may not think it matters - and Caribbean schools certainly will tell you the same thing - but it does. You'd likely be better off applying to DO schools (if you know and understand the philosophy and like it), as DO schools - in general - are a little more willing to look at non-traditional students. Good luck with it.
