Hey everyone!

I must say this one great forum it, has sooooooo much to offer! 🙂

I will be a freshman this year, and college starts sept 27th. I am attending Oregon State Univ. and i was just wondering if i should try and transfer to a more prestigous undergrad school. If i do, will it help in my application to medical school? Because i attending some brand name private school rather then some generic state school? Im not sure this question has been bugging me all along.

Also i am browsing through these forums with time i have and it seems that poeple are doing volunteer work at hospitals while in college. I dont have a car on campus and im just wondering how you guys dealt with transportation n all to the hosptial and to other EC acitivites?

Also i attending PSU ( Portland State Univ. , a 4 year institution) this summer and took math 251 ( calc 1), U.S. Hist 202 and writing 121. I got A's in all the classes and i was just wondering how it will transfer to my OSU transcript once i start college there. I hear the credit for the classes will be transferred, does that mean the grades wont appear on my OSU transcript? (they better, i worked hard to get those grades ).

I would only transfer if you are unhappy there. It's true that medschools respect prestigious undergraduate universities, but if you prove yourself with a good MCAT score and maintain a high GPA, then you will be fine - not to mention a lot less in debt. And don't worry about the grades not appearing on your OSU transcript because AMCAS will compute your GPA with the grades from any university or college you've ever attended anyway. As far as travel, I used the bus to get to the hospital.

Actually, I walked and used the bus to get to my job at the hospital. Where there's a will there's a way 🙂 In my city there's a discount rate to use the taxis if you're a student, pay like $80 one time and you can call anytime and get a ride. So there's an option...or you could always make friends with someone with a car and go with them.

As to the grades - I took calc 1, general bio, and english through another college and they transferred fine to my school. But like the above poster said, even if they don't transfer you will still get credit through AMCAS.

Don't transfer unless you're unhappy there. I'm fortunate enough to have 4 hospitals within walking distance of my school, but if I didn't, there's always public transportation 🙂

Try doing some work on campus first. Maybe by your junior/senior year you will have a vehicle. Well, these are just suggestions. Alas, I'm only a freshman as well, so I don't know much about the process.
