Should there be an IQ limit for future physicians?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No, really guys. I'm sorry, I realize that the perceived malicious suggestiveness my post carried did offend many of you. For all those I offended, I apologize.

Let's make the IQ limit 120.

OP:
Richard Feynman wasn't even a fan of IQ tests...apparently he was a 130, which I think most would agree was an vast under-estimation of his intellectual ability. Write me back when you have QED figured out.

Don't flatter yourself that you're fighting the good fight for a dissenting opinion. You'd have to be posting something intelligent for that to be the case. Instead, you're just a pre-med claiming that some people who have made it through medical school and residency and have all the knowledge necessary to make life-or-death decisions aren't qualified to make those decisions due to IQ. How about you actually become a licensed physician before you start judging how qualified physicians are?

Honestly, this thread reads like an idiot posted something poorly thought-out and then got butthurt when everyone laughed at him

If you read the title of the post, I think your questions should be answered.

Please edit your post title to say basement instead of limit. Sorry it's just really annoying me.

No, economics is pseudoscience anyways. So, I'm not going to apply their rules.

Don't try and act like you were just asking a totally-not-stupid question and not really spending your entire first post arguing in favor of an IQ lower limit 🙄

I think this one needs to read a little closer. Go on, you can come back when you're ready.

Speed Limit - 75 mph

According to you that means you can't go slower than 75 right?

Let's face it. It was so many youth's dreams to become doctors, many realized they were incompetent at adolescence; however, many continued on to pursue this dream in college. I know MANY premeds at my college who I clearly see as incompetent, they lack the basic intelligence to become proficient docs. And what scares me is that some of these people through sheer willpower will actually prevail and eventually become a physician by padding their resumes with ECs and kissing up for stellar LORs. All of this conveys their passion, but sorry, passion isn't enough.

I love my fellow humans. I don't want to see my friends/family killed or debilitated by sub-par doctors who lack intrinsic reasoning and judgment to perform their jobs proficiently.

My proposal is that one should take a basic IQ test by a licensed state psychologist in order to see if they qualify for the profession. This is not a dictatorial policy, it is simply one that works in the interest of the lives of others. Minimum should be around 130.

Any suggestions/comments?

You most likely have an IQ no higher than 110 and i would put money on that. let me give you an example i work doing some psychology research in the summer at a local lab we had a kid who was in 7th grade had gotten a 30 on the ACT (mind you he had no special schooling and was actually from a bad school system) ended up with a 125 IQ. Now i don't know about you but i think this kid if he decided would make one hell of a doctor ( at least as far as being knowledgeable). please take your understanding of IQ and talk to a psych grad student so they can fix your perspective.

Feed me your tears kmedbro88. Your rage is so delicious.

And back in my day, trolling used to be an art. If you're more subtle about it, people will call you an idiot after 5 posts instead of after 1.

Alright, I'll bite.

There should be a more scientific way of going about testing one's fluid intelligence. Maybe all medical school applicants should have their skull sawed off so that doctors can measure the rate of firing for their cranial neurons when solving complex mathematical equations. How cool would that be?

If it meant getting into Harvard, I'd probably do it.

I'll bite. I'm assuming you think the word future makes a difference? Here's a hint: it doesn't.

But it does! 😡

So you don't think the IQ lower limit should apply to current physicians, but you think it should apply to current pre-meds who, if they "prevail only due to passion/willpower" (and therefore pass med school and residency and licensing exams), will be exactly the same as current physicians?

Troll. At this point you're just writing nonsense to keep people typing. I'll join the "over 30" side of the betting pool, but only because I think most of the mods are asleep right now.

...and now he's backed into a corner because his circular reasoning and ad hominem has failed him...

If getting into Harvard is more important than being a good doctor...?

Also, if they cut your skull open, that might have a detrimental affect on your IQ.

Alright, looks like no one provided an effective counter-argument to my original claim to warrant concession on my behalf.

Thus I proclaim the victory of this thread in the name of myself!

Fluid intelligence? You don't even have a solid definition for intelligence, trollololololol.

Listen bro, if you're gonna troll, get better at it. You fell way too quick.

 Hilarious attempt at a graceful exit. Dude, you should've taken my advice 50 posts ago:

dude, troll, just quit while you're ahead. Or not ahead. Whatever.

OP could have gotten to 30 posts easily without getting banned.

Weak sauce.

So I guess Ben Carson shouldn't have been a doctor...

WOW an even better idea! ..........👎

just so you know you are somehow trying to create a world in which only the "MOST INTELLIGENT" to your standard anyway would be allowed to go to med school. But do you really think a pre-med student is the best person to make that call..

my bad. I definitely could've done a better job with baiting him into posting more, but I'm super bad at this whole trolling thing. advice please?

lol....i'm not a troll. the vast majority of my posts are not troll posts. and the posts that sound like troll posts are almost always just extreme forms of sarcasm.

O/T, Wolfman, I LOL'd hard at your new avatar and tagline.

Also, OP, neurosurg wouldn't do a bone flap for that, they'd do burrholes. Get your shiz straight, man. You don't need to have a 130 IQ to be a doctor, in fact, most people with IQs of 130 are smart enough to stay away from being MDs. Troller be trollin'.

In other news, 2+ year member. Count it SDN. Mods, I understand you get one wish once you reach this point, mine is the power to edit other people's posts for...uh...correctness

Haha thanks!

What about a bench/curl requirement for everyone wanting to do procedures? You know, to weed out the good-natured docs that just can't quite get that needle/tube/artificial knee in there?

NickNaylor this is to you.

I know you frequent these boards quite often (you lack a life, I know). Thus, I've seen a copious amount of your posts. In conclusion, you're lamer than my great aunt.

Dude, don't call your great aunt lame.

1) limit automatically implies upper limit unless you specifically say lower limit.

2) basement is a lower limit. have you not taken an econ course or is that too good for 130+ IQ people (~125 IQ here.....feelsbadbrah.tiff)

You should take calculus.

Your definition of a limit is wrong.

👍

Also, "check the firing rates of their cranial neurons"... Really? That'd predict intelligence just as well as giving them a colouring book to fill in with their own blood. Maybe you should make more intelligent/informed comments lest you get excluded by the IQ limit yourself.

But,

OP, I know a couple of people who fall into the category of those you speak of. I pray I will never be under their knife. However, I think the steps (1-3) do a good job in deciding who goes where and does what.
