In April this year my school approved a Masters of Biomedical and Health Sciences Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (where the medical school is by the way). I applied, was accepted and classes started in June. Because this is the first cohort in the program, most of us in the program didn't really have any idea of what to expect. The curriculum is set up kinda like the med school at UAB, but we had no idea it would be taught by the faculty there. The classes follow this lineup: Molecules and Cells, Microbiology and Immunology, Neuroendocrinology, Cardiopulmonary, Genitourinary, GI, Muscles and Skin, Clinical Application, and non-thesis research. Again, all of them are taught by medical school professors and the lecturer varies daily. During the summer we also had an MCAT prep course from kaplan included in tuition.

So my question is if this is considered an SMP or not? There are indirect ties to the medical school, but we don't know for sure if we have any guarantee "in" with the school or not yet. Supposedly its in the works to have guaranteed interviews, but nothing for certain yet.

thanks!

There is no "official" standard for what an SMP is. In your current situation, are most students and the faculty working under the philosophy that the program is designed primarily to gain entrance to medical school?

Yeah, it's literally in the mission statement that it's to help us get into professional school. Everyone here is trying to get into medical, dental, or PA.
