After Dental school is complete and say 33% decide to specialize, does anyone know what is involved? Generally you have a 3 yr residency from what I have heard, but not knowing anyone in the field, I was wondering if these are paid opportunities or if there are additional costs (like tuition). Furthermore, if they are paid, how much generally can one expect to make during their residency years per specialty...enough to pay off D-school? Thanks to anyone that can answer. I'm definitely jumping the gun here considering who knows who will be accepted, but I was just curious about this topic.

This would be a better question for the Dentistry forum so you can ask questions from those who have been to various specialties. From what I know, they do vary a lot. Some specialties are 2 years, some 3, and some more like 6 (OMFS). Some pay a stipend, and others you pay for. Most residencies/AEGD will pay a stipend. They also vary in how competitive it is to be accepted into each one. Endo and ortho are extremely competitive, OMFS a tiny bit less so (but they're looking for a huge commitment), and pros, pedo, and perio a bit less.

And in terms of paying back loans, I think the general assumption is that you may not get a lot done DURING residency, but you will be making considerably more than a generalist when you get out. (twice or three times as much if you choose your practice correctly.)

Some private loans (Like Access) can defer throughout an entire residency, if you want to be paying 11% interest the whole time!

as i understand it (and i could be wrong) only aegd/gpr, omfs, and pedo residencies gets paid whereas all other residencies require that you pay for tuition. these residencies only pay about 40,000 which probably won't be enough to cover your loans
