Hey folks. I'm in week 2 of my 2-week phlebotomy course. Then I look for my externship. I do fourty hours, then I've got my license.

Any phlebotomists here?

What I'm learning is really interesting - I decided to get into it because I can do it part time while I'm in school, and I wanted to see if the medical field was for me. We'll see what happens.

Big steps... this is a major career change! I was in computers before. I've also gotten lots of positive feedback from the teachers - first time a teacher of any employment related skill has told me anything good about myself! It feels good.

Congratulations. Now, let me warn you...don't be surprised if sometime down the road you find yourself checking out other peoples' veins, like when you're standing on line at the market, in an elevator, etc. 🙂

Just out of curiosity - do you have to take that course in order to perform phlebotomy? A couple of years ago when I phlebottled ( 😀 ) I simply had some on the job training and was turned loose on my own after a week or two - nothing formal. And I totally started checking out sexy veins after I started working.

In California, you have to be licensed. This started a few years back when some phlebotomist got it into her head to re-use her favorite needle. The licensing involves 60 hours of didactic (classroom) and 40 hours of clinical experience [or fifty sticks, whichever comes first].

I've inquired about this though and apparently some places will put you to work after finishing your externship and while you are waiting to get licensed. The wait between graduation and recieving your license can be several months.

If you've already done a lot of sticks, then you just have to sit through the classroom portion.
