Full disclosure, I do not have an acceptance to either of these schools (I have an A to a diff school) I am waitlisted to KCU (either campus) and I interviewed for SHSU in August - hoping Match Day works its magic. However, I want to be as prepared as possible and have thought out all possible scenarios in case I need to work quickly to secure housing and whatnot.

Pros of SHSU
- I currently live 25 mins away from campus w/ parents. Could live at home for a semester. Brothers live in Houston (about an hour away). Significant other lives in Dallas - just overall a large support system here, especially since I have a puppy
- The school is new, which I personally find exciting / trailblazing. Could be fun.
- Loved the vibe of the school and the way the professors raved about their students. Felt very collaborative
- 97% first time COMLEX pass rate

Cons of SHSU
- They have not produced a single graduating class as of yet, so residency match list data is not there
- research opportunities don't seem to be as prevalent
- fewer connections

Pros of KCUCOM
- a new city could be exciting.
- much more established.
- better connections due to being more established
- more research opportunities from what I have seen and read

Cons of KCUCOM
- it is far from family, significant other. Would be difficult, especially with having a dog who is still a puppy

Looking for advice!

Personally would choose KCU over any new school to keep my options open for residency. But, I can see why you'd choose to stay home as well. Go with your gut and don't look back!

This is secondhand, grapevine type information, but I was talking to an M3 from a different Texas med school recently and we started to discuss SHSU. They have a few friends who go there and described the whole operation as something of a, and I quote, "****show." I can't recall specifics, but I would advise heavy caution to unknown entities. If anything, do some deeper digging over the next 2 weeks and see if you can talk to current students candidly, maybe offer to buy them coffee for a conversation. Your support system being local would be hugely beneficial, but going to an established program that has worked out its kinks would likely result in a better overall experience.
