Has anybody experienced asking for a sign on bonus for an academic physician position when they were offered a job? If so, how does a sign on bonus work....meaning do they pay before you start work with them or soon after you start work? Can you ask them if they can pay before you start work or will they rescind the offer letter? In my case, after my fellowship is over, I will have 2 months with no pay before I start working with them. So if I ask for a sign on bonus, I will have to give them that reason and I have no way for me and my family to survive 2 months with no pay.
