Hi all,

I'm currently in the process of applying for Navy HPSP. I've frequented this forum for months and I really don't want this thread to turn into a debate on whether or not I should be applying...so let's just say that money is not the sole reason for me applying.

Anyways, my recruiter sent me forms to start the application process, some of which require my signature, including 1) Application for Commission which includes the "Motivational Statement" 2) Prescreening for Medical Applicants.

I know I probably sound paranoid here, but for those of you have applied for HPSP, will signing those forms in of themselves commit me to any active duty time whatsoever?? There's no mention of a committment on those 2 forms and my recruiter said the only signature that will actually commit me to the military is the one to be put on the scroll contract, which only comes at the end of the whole application process.

Also, I haven't even been accepted to a med school, since i'm on the waitlist at 3 of them where I interviewed. I just wanted to get the Navy HPSP application process started in case I do get pulled off a waitlist.

All in all, I just want to make sure I'm not prematurely signing myself up for any active duty time by signing those 2 forms when I haven't even been accepted to med school. And I think the best answer would come from those who have already applied for HPSP, and probably not the recruiter.

Thanks

Go ahead and sign those things--they don't mean anything. Where you are actually being sworn in, it's obvious. First off, you need to be accepted at a US med school. Second, the actually swearing in process requires you to raise your right hand and take an oath.

Good luck with the waitlist and good job on being proactive with the paperwork--with a little luck, you may actually get paid when school starts.

For what it's worth, definately take the complaints on this forum seriously, but understand that there are a lot of happy, fulfilled military docs out there. The flight surgeons I got to know when I was on active duty were a great bunch of characters and had a lot of esprit.

You need an actual contract for it to be binding, not an application. Don't worry. 🙂

Thanks for the advice guys. Yea, I was pretty paranoid about signing any form whatsover, from advice given by my dad who was in the military, but now i'm anxious to get this app process underway.

Yep, being waitlisted with no acceptances is excruciating. And Perrotifsh, Tulane is actually one of the schools where i'm waitlisted. What is this ACP program you mentioned?
