I am in fellowship and am planning to sign for a job 16 months in advance of start date. The employer is offering a $30k signing bonus plus a $15k total residency stipend (stipend is divided and paid monthly from the time of signing the contract to the start of the job). However, the employer says the signing bonus of $30k is given with my first paycheck and not at the time of signing. Is this common? Shouldn't signing bonuses be given at the time of signing and would it not defeat the purpose otherwise? Just wanted to see if this was common practice. Thank you.
