So for my analytical chemistry class I was thinking...

So on my first test I got a 37/100 raw score.

That gets curved up to a 68/100

There is a 5 point out of class extra credit opportunity

And the final average cut off for an A is 81 and higher.

Isn't this a sign that something is wrong? This means by only getting almost 1/3 of the test right, I almost got an A.

I just think its hilarious. No matter how much you study for his tests, he expects you to fail miserably.

Just like my physiology class. An A is what normal people would consider a low D.

I think a successful professor challenges but also encourages students. A 37 is surely a challenge, but not encouraging at all.

These professors who give the hardest tests in the world with scores that average in the 30s or so in order to prove they are smarter than the students are not doing their job IMO. Tests should be challenging, but also fair. It's supposed to test on what people know, not on what they don't know. Oh well, you will run into those all the time, and if the class is curved better be on the correct side of it. Got to play whatever system the professor runs and then move on.

this is a bad professor: it was for a genetics class.
started with 175 students. at the end of the semester there were 37.
average for the exams were a 27-30%. Added 5% to each exam for a curve.
My friend took one of our exams to a PhD in genetics that he was doing research with. The PhD couldnt answer a single question on the exam, other than a few vocabulary terms.
that my friend, is a bad professor. but the university has to keep him around because hes a freakin genius when it comes to research and hes in his lab literally 7 days a week for at least 15 hours a day.

Why don't they just keep him locked in there?

We actually have a professor that was just talked to by school officials because his tests are always in the 30s and he gives very very few As. (by the way he writes questions for the MCAT 🙄).

They told him to make the tests easier or make the curve help students more. 👍

Yeah....I've had this type of professor

In a MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS class.

Bleh. The oldschool geezer gave 5 A's in a 60 person class. I had to suck up to salvage a B+. I put in more effort studying for his tests than I did for some of my extremely difficult bio exams (class average 68 among bio majors)

Just my luck considering I had him for the ONE semester that he was at our school.
