Similar strategy as Step 1 on Step 2? Is FA for Step 2 that bad?

I had my FA for step 1 book with me throughout my 2nd year and annotated it here and there while studying for classes. I'm wondering if people do something like that for Step 2. I noticed that people don't like FA for Step 2. But when I looked at Crush it was full of what you essentially need to know without much (if any) background theory. I suppose I can look up stuff from other sources. But, if there is a book that is more comprehensive than Crush with more explanation of why certain steps come next in managing a patient without having too much info for step 2 the way "Step up to medicine" seems to have, I'd get that. I plan on using Step up for the medicine shelf. But, from what I gather it's too much for Step 2?? Is the latest edition of FA that bad? I've read that how to manage patient conditions is not laid out well on FA......
