Hey guys,
I've only recently stumbled on this helpful forum which sucks because I'm graduating very soon. I've only recently began considering dentistry as a profession. I'm curious, what is everybody's motivation/reasoning behind choosing dentistry as an occupation?

My dentist was so cute and I am hoping to see her again as a person who pursues the same field...LOL. JK.

I am interested in dentistry because I have always wanted to be a doctor, and decided that the 'hands-on' approach of treatment is more to my liking.

Too many reasons... but here are a few... more flexibility career-wise, I'm good with my hands, I tend to stare at people's teeth and secretly think about how I would fix them, I have nightmares about my teeth falling out (but if I become a dentist, I'll always be ready!), and I get bored reading the Pre-med section of SDN. Go predents!!! :hardy: 😍

Oh... and I know too many people who neglect their teeth. If I become a dentist, I can take care of the ones I love, & other patients.

and is "kiljaedon" from wow? 🙂

Another good one is "when I was a kid I had bad teeth and my orthodontist fixed them, now I want to be a dentist"

there's a lot of reaons. I like dentistry because it's an occupation that is very versatile. As a dentist you are: a doctor, an artist, a business man, and a manager. I love all of those aspects, especially since I have very good motor skills and love science and helping people!

I have a question to some previous posters. You chose dentistry for what you can do while your not working (such as short hours and be our own boss etc) or the actual career of being a dentist (the whole dental health)?

In dentistry... you are a doctor...if you want to make money... being your own boss is the right direction and is one of the best aspects dentistry offers... not saying you can't make money on other professions. Dental Schools also pays their faculty pretty well, that's what I heard. Or you can get a phD and do research... but I have no idea how they make their money to be honest with you LOL

I wanted to become a dentist because I wanted to help people. Plus I have always been very good with my hands and very people oriented. I also like the idea of being my own boss. Plus the relaxed atmosphere of a dental office really appealed to me.

well for me when I was aked that question in an interview, I said its all about the trust realtionship between dentist and patient, coz u see them over and over agin-if ur good obviously. and then they went on to ask me why did I choose dentistry over medicine, I said I wanna foucs on the precaution and education, raising awareness etc. before things get out of control. That actually did me a lot of good! 🙂

Less risky than being a medical doctor! Of course I won't say that on my interview 😉

I dunno, I guess I just went through a period of fairly heavy drinking, and decided... dentistry seems like a good idea. I'd imagine that happens a lot with people in this field.🙄
