I’ve seen medical students in the past talk about how they sacrificed some of their preclinical grades and studying time For classes in favor of studying for Step 1. This was especially true at some schools whose curriculum is not as geared towards Step 1.

Since the exam will most likely be P/F for the class of 2024 should we prioritize class rank, preclinical grades(if you go to a school that gives grades), and research over studying for Step 1? Or should we still put more focus into Step 1? Does Step 1 score make a better Step 2 score?

Thank you for any input that you can give. Congrats to my fellow classmates!

I am a rising M2, so I haven’t taken step 1 yet, but I did look into step 2. So step 2 is clinical application of stuff from step 1. So you have to master it , whether it is p/f or not .
So I decided for myself that I am going to study for it as if it is graded.
I am pushing harder on research though.

I think you should still give Step 1 a lot of attention, but with the exam going P/F, you don't have to bust your butt as much to get a 250+. But don’t neglect it. If you fail the exam, you will torpedo your residency app. Also preparing well for Step 1 gives you a good base of knowledge when you start clinical rotations.

If you are starting school this fall the general advice is concentrate on school work/join clubs and interest groups your first semester. Once you get a good feel for medical school then start thinking about research and Step.

The best students I have are the rare ones who don't play these games. They learn medicine because the human body is an amazing construct and medicine itself is an amazing subject. The change in Step 1 grading gives medical students the opportunity to frame their learning around something more intellectually invigorating than a single exam composed of 280 multiple choice questions. Don't blow it.

Wait. So you're telling me that I should try to learn something and grow as a person instead of just figuring out the best way to maximize my chances of getting a good residency?

Pages 3/4 of this document are the only things that matter in medical school. Yes, you should only worry about getting a residency in the field/location you want
