I chose a med school that would allow me to live with my parents and have them tend my little ones while I went to school. But now I am applying to residencies and don't want to limit myself geographically. Are there any ingle moms out there doing residency and finding a way to have your kids taken care of? Mine will be 7 and 5 when I start. I just don't see how I can survive overnight call and early morning rounds without my family there. Someone help!

I don't mean to be an ass, but did you not consider this when you started medical school?

I'm not a medical student yet, but I feel for you. Especially since I'm about to be a single mom myself, I wonder what I would do if I was in your situation. I'm lucky for right now to have people who can watch the little ones, but what if that changes in the future?

The only thing I can think of is to ask what kind of family support structures are in place, either formal or informal, from the residents in a program when you go on the meet-and-greets for your residency interviews. If you could meet some of the spouses and get a heads-up on how the other residents handle their childcare issues, that would be great. Then only rank those programs that seem to be supportive of residents with families. And move as soon as possible after finding out where you've matched so that it gives you time to find a good babysitter/au pair/overnight childcare, as well as time to find a good pediatrician, dentist, and school.

Good luck, you can do it.
