I am taking my boards tomorrow and I'm starting to freak out. What is the situation regarding sitting for the actual exam but not actually turning it in for a score and voiding it? I hope that I feel well prepared tomorrow when I take the exam, but what happens if I feel I did really poorly during the exam. Can one just not submit it for a score (so it wouldn't be official). I have heard it will turn up as you having sat for the exam, but is that it? Would it be worse to take it and do poorly, than to not submit for a score? Does my question make any sense?

No.

So by taking the exam, do you have to submit it for a score. Or can you void it like on the MCAT and not have it scored at all?

im not sure, but i know most people ive talked to, even some who have done well, think they bombed the exam when they left. so...gut feelings might not be the best thing to go on here.

You are either ready or you aren't. There are no in betweens.
If you feel you are not ready for the exam, please talk you your dean and see what works best for you. If you are ready, take it and make the best out of it during test day. IMO, this is a useless thread and may show some insecurity on your behalf.

Thanks for your post. Did they feel like the really bombed it, or just med-student type A personality bombed it where they didn't feel confident on 5-10% of the exam? You might not have an answer to this but I'm curious.

Yes and what is your point? I was asking a serious question what one should do if they don't feel comfortable during the exam with their performance. I'm not talking about pre-test issues. I will be taking my exam tomorrow, but I was wondering what I should do/what my options are if during the exam I don't feel confident it my performance. You have added absolutely nothing to the discussion or helped in anyway. May I even add you have been a jerk with your responses. Please take it somewhere else as I don't need your attitude right now.

these were people who felt so badly and so sure they had just failed; that they were crying for hours after the exam, inconsolable and whining about putting in 6 weeks worth of effort and having just failed the exam. so you be the judge there.

My point is that this thread reflects that you might not be ready (one day before the exam) and need to explore your options. Once you hit the "start" button you need to face that challenge. If for some reason, you feel that you are not going to pass you need to accept that you failed the exam and will have another opportunity to demonstrate that you know your stuff, just like everybody else. If the purpose of this thread is to vent out a little, I totally understand your position and reccomend you either talk to your dean. If this is a legitimate question, --> why don't you call prometric center???

As I said, your question doesn't make sense because you know the rules and there are no shortcuts or exceptions for this test. You either take it and pass it or you take it and fail. There are no in betweens.

OP,
I'm sorry but whats_up_doc is giving you bad information/facts regarding your quesiton. Look in your FA pg7 for your answer:

Under section, "If I freak out and leave, what happens to my score?"

"Your scheduling permit shows a CIN that you will enter onto your computer screen to start your exam. Entering the CIN is the same as breaking the seal on a test book, and you are considered to have started the exam when you do so. However, no score will be reported if you do not complete the exam. In fact, if you leave at any time from the start of the test to the last block, no score will be reported. The fact that you started but did no complete the exam, however, will appear on your USMLE score transcript.

The exam ends when all question blocks have been completed or when their time has expired. As you leave the testing center, you will receive a printed test completion notice to document your completion of the exam. To receive an official score, you must finish the entire exam."

I dont think you can sit for the exam and then void it at the end. You pretty much "submit" your answers at the end of each block. If you do all the problems and then not submit block 7, it's like you answers all 6 blocks and then left block 7 unanswered.

what were your practice exams like? I'd just go ahead and take it tomorrow if your practice exams were decent. How prepared you feel (especially the week of the exam and after coming out of prometrics) isn't a reliable way to gauge your true performance. A better way to gauge this is your past performance (ie NBME exams)

I've heard if u get up and leave in the middle of the exam the test is thrown out... If u just get up and walk out without completing it.. Call the testing site when you wake up, they will tell you for sure...

You can call prometric and re-schedule the exam tommorrow. I cancelled it the day of a couple months ago then rescheduled it a few days later, for the same reason. You may have to get permission from the dean if it cuts into rotations. Also, there's a rescheduling fee.

Thanks for the help guys. I got a good nights sleep which helped. I am going to head over and just trust that my preparation over the last 2 years has done its job. Now its time to trust in that as well as just do my best. Good luck to the rest of you still studying or taking your exams soon.

Just press submit at the end. You'll be fine. 🙂 Then again, I don't get my scores till the morning so i'll let you know then if you should heed my advice or not!

I can imagine some serious ramifications if you take the test without submitting it, its almost like cheating... Don't do it. if you need to, just don't show up. The NBME are like a pack of wild dogs, you don't want them after you.

I hope everything worked out for the better. Im sure you did great today.
