are there pharmacy jobs that allow you to sit? I work part time as a tech now and standing for 4 to 5 hours is doable, but if i put in a longer shift, I get back pain because it pinches a nerve in my hip...just wondering if working as a full-time pharmacist might be a problem in the future. Since when I stand for longer shifts I have to go home and lay down for several hours to 'readjust.'

The staff pharmacists at the hospital I volunteered at all sit in front of their terminals and verify orders for their entire shift. Sounds perfect!

Now, by no means are clinical/staff positions easy to get or plentiful... So if you really need a career where sitting is the standard position, and it's THAT serious, you might want to consider it still. Obviously I don't know you, but taking 100k in debt and spending the time to become a pharmacist only to get a job in a retail joint and have to stand for 12-16 hrs sounds like torture for someone who has a back problem like you do.

There's no time to sit in retail. In fact, I've never even seen a stool inside the pharmacy area of a big box retail joint. I think accommodation to your condition will depend heavily upon the employer. I mean, if you're actually disabled and you are covered under the ADA then perhaps you could request a stool be brought into the pharmacy for you and there you go.

I guess it depends on how busy the pharmacy is. I've seen other pharmacists at other stores sitting due to being so slow.

As a tech I've gotten used to the standing as I never sit (except for lunch as well). Good shoes are a MUST for long shifts.

I work in a pharmacy(retail) where the night pharmacist sits on a stool her whole shift bitching about how the computers are too low so she needs to sit. It's a pain but she refuses to get rid of the stool...

Is this the norm in pharmacies? Every CVS I have worked at had stools (with backs!) for breaks or sitting down to take messages or anything else that the customer cannot see. In other words, no sitting in front of customers, but otherwise it's fine. How awful is it in other places?

As far as I can tell it's not at all mandatory. Could be based on manager discretion.

We have chairs in our pharmacy, but we're way too busy to use them. I work at grocery chain pharmacy, so there is only one pharmacist and one tech working at any given time. We're just too busy to sit, that's really what it comes down to. If you have time to sit, put a chair in your pharmacy. If not, leave it out!

Definitely agree with the good shoes thing.

Where i'm volunteering at, some of the workers just sit on the stools and steps we use to get bottles from high shelves. Manager is cool with it too 👍

The checkers at the grocery places here in geneva all get stools. And you have to bag your own groceries in your own bag. ... the US isn't doing it right, man

In all seriousness, I think it's pretty terrible that pharmacies don't have any stools at all. We had them when I worked at Osco and my IPPE site had them as well.

We have one stool but it's only for reaching things on shelves. No one would dare sit on it lol. I have always had the perception that sitting was unprofessional because our manager would write us up for sitting in plain sight.

Um, using a stool as a step ladder is a bad idea. You need a step ladder for that.
