A bit long story but I would sincerely appreciate your help.

Hey everyone,
So I have a little dilemma with one of my professors. He thinks that I've been skipping the class for the last few weeks which isn't true. I can't have him have that kind of a perception of me since I'm taking his class in the fall and spring and I'm planning on asking him to write me a letter of recommendation. This spring is the first class he's taught me and I've already built a somewhat good - yet still new - relationship with him.
NOTE: The fall class I'm taking with him is already full but thanks to our good relationship, he promised me to put me on top of the waitlist, go talk to the department, and make sure I get his class.

So here we go

Since April, I've missed one of the 2 weekly meetings for a program I do at a local hospital. He is aware of this (meaning he gave me his permission to skip every other class starting from April when the program started - NOT the whole semester.) Also, attendance is not taken so grade-wise it wouldn't matter anyway. We have our last midterm coming up and I went to see him to reschedule my midterm due to the program I'm doing. We rescheduled it no problem. The problem is that he claims I've been skipping the class.
Him: "Oh I haven't seen you in weeks. You're asking me to put you in my fall class that's already full and you don't even show up to this class"
Me: *CONFUSEDDD* "I'm sorry Dr. X what do you mean?"
Him: "Yeah I haven't seen you in class in a long time"

I went on to explain him that I have been there every other day of instruction since April, but I'm missing Wednesdays due to the program. He said "Oh I forgot that you're doing that". I replied by reiterating that I have been there every Monday but Wednesdays are for the program. The convo continued for another minute or so about the matter and it ended him saying " Oh well I guess I don't remember seeing you then or maybe I've just noticed your absence on Wednesday and haven't paid attention to your presence on Mondays".

We then talked about other stuff for about 15 min or so before I had to go to my other class.

My worry is that his perception of me has changed and he thinks I'm a sloppy student who skips classes. I mean, to think that I haven't been there for weeks and I have the nerve to ask him to place me in his full class and cut everyone else off in the waitlist is not good. I'm getting a pure A from his class, so I'm only worried about our future classes.

My husband said we should definitely send him a nice&polite email later on today to reiterate that I have been there, and that there are some folks who can verify the information.

Do you guys think that if I'll just continue being a good student in the fall & spring and have a good relationship with him, I should be fine asking him to write the letter? Or do you think this is a really big red flag in his perception of me?

I know I can't rely on getting a letter from him etc etc but hypothetically if he were to write me one and everything else (grades, the relationship etc) were good with him, do you think this confusion about my presence matters?

Now reward yourself for reading this whole thing lol!
Thank you so much!!!

I would say don't worry about it! Professors can be forgetful and it sounds like he acknowledged that you did have a good reason for missing class. If you want you can send a follow up reminder about joining his class in fall and throw in a sentence about the attendance thing, but I wouldn't send an entire email dedicated to this misunderstanding as it sounds like he didn't really care about it once you had clarified. The fact that he talked to you for 15 minutes afterward suggests that his perception of you was not affected by this.

I have had misunderstandings like this happen with professors before, and I know it can be really stressful, but I've learned that it's best to drop it as soon as the situation has been diffused, because by that point it's better not to remind them about what happened. And I think you can definitely still get a good letter from him in spite of this!!

1. Chill out
2. Mondays sit in the front of the class/ask questions/engage (make yourself stick out)
3. Can you work on an extra project with your professor? In undergrad I could to do Honors Projects with professors who were teaching non honors class work. This way I still couldhave a more meaningful experience (and therefore also more meaningful LoR).

What are you doing at a hospital that causes you to miss one class a week for several weeks of a semester? Missing a class a couple of times is very different than missing half of the classes and the midterm. The teacher might just think you are taking advantage of the “friendship”.

Time management is important. Don't skip every other class.

Ok well I have missed 4 lectures out of 32 lectures and had to reschedule 1 midterm out of 5 midterms. So lets not act here like I'm doing something horrific by missing a few lectures. My semester will be over this week and thus I won't miss any lectures or midterms anymore. Someone might miss those 4/32 lectures because of an illness/alarm didn't go off/traffic etc etc... So no I haven't missed half of the classes. This unique program I was blessed enough to get into started in April, NOT when my classes started.

Did you even read the post? I'm not asking for advise on time management. The program I'm doing isn't "come and go whenever you want to" so this problem I'm having has absolutely nothing to do with my time management skills, which are pretty close to perfect by the way. Thanks for contributing

Its no big deal, if all else fails, ask another professor for a letter. Just meet with them before they write the letter to talk about what things should be included.

I don't think u should ask him for a letter. u don't wanna risk it AND even if he does write, u want a strong letter not a sloppy one which I totally see him writing. btw it seems like he dislikes the fact that you skip class wednesday, and had to reschedule midterm. don't risk it

Don't get a LOR from this professor. Quality is > Quantity.

I chose semester long professors for letter writers over one I had for 2 years.

Also no need to send him an email. You gave him your word in person and sending an email on top of that will seem too tryhard and not genuine. Just forget about him as a letter writer and your stress will go.

No need to be snarky, everyone's just trying to help.
