I just recieved an interview from Southern Illinois University. Does anybody know the importance they place on the interview and what my chances are for getting into the school if I attend, or don't attend. Thank you very much.

SIU doesnt require interviews for acceptance; they are one of the few schools that do not require the interview. It is not even considered an interview, it is just a tour/visit day. Occasionally they ask to meet with a student if they are an iffy applicant to determine their quality. It is very informal and enjoyable. I work in a SIU-SDM lab, and there have been hardly any applicants tour/visit this year that I have seen. Alton is a rough town even though it seems nice based on the school alone. Make sure you look around all of Alton (especially downtown, Broadway and Washington Streets) to get a real feel of what it is like to live here. You definitely want to sleep with the light on in Alton.

It's true that Alton is kinda close to east saint louis, where you wouldnt wanna end up living. But I've had friends who've gone to SIU and friends who live close to the campus. they don't really complain about the area but more the fact that they're kinda away from the main action (whatever that means). But Dr2Bsoon brought up a good point: Do go and see the town for yourself and figure out if it is were you can see yourself for the next four years. good luck with the interview.

Alton is a good 20 miles from East St. Louis. It is not a friendly town however, and continues to have increased crime rates every year as businesses are slowly leaving the community. I currently attend SIU-Edwardsville, Alton's affiliated school. They only interview if your on the bubble, it allows them to find out if you truly have what it takes to be a dentist. I have pretty good academic and test scores, one of my friends has a 3.3 and just avg to below avg DAT scores. She has an interview in a few weeks and I dont. I hope that maybe gives you a bit of an idea about their interviews. Besides, they do not except hardly anyone from out of state so most people who attend SIU are familiar with the school prior to beginning their dental education.

I just realized something disturbing about admissions; SIU included. So SIU takes a class of 50 students each year. But of those 50, about 15 are the early admit kids who haven't finished college and don't have to work their butts off to get in. So now, we are competing for about 35 spots. After you figure in the kids that get in with the minorities/ affirmative action fullfillment thing of about 10 seats per year, there are only around 25 spots up for grabs for the majority of the applicant pool. So 25 are filled by the early admit people and the minority pool, and 25 by the entire rest of the pool. 25 spots is all we have available to compete for...wow.... makes it seem even scarier. Not very many spots.
