SIU Interview

Can anyone who interviewed at SIU provide some feedback? I was told there is a writing sample as soon as you get there

I also have an interview there coming up. I haven't heard anything about a writing sample. Although, when I scheduled the appt they did say come 30 min before the interview because there was an "activity." This would be great knowledge to have before the interview. I am not sure you want to go to SIU. I have heard that faculty and quality of education there are not very good unless you don't plan to specialize.

and I have heard that they have newer facilities, very nice and welcoming faculty and repeatedly have high board scores in top 5-10. Add to it low instate tuition and low living expenses and the school looks like a very good choice if you get accepted...

I had an interview at SIU yesterday (I'll try to fill out an interview form later soon). The faculty were very nice (the few we met with) and the facilities were amazing when considering the low low tuition (around $35,000 each year) and low living costs.

The interview is very laidback, they ask everyone the same questions, so there are no oddball questions, just the basics, why dentistry, where do you see yourself in ten years, strengths/weaknesses.

The writing prompt is very easy too, one hundred words on an ethical situation.

I liked the school a lot, but it isn't a school like Penn or Columbia. Plus the town and surrounding area are very dull. I would give it a shot and see if it suits you. Also, they don't have a very high rate of specialization, about 1/3 to 1/4, but they do have some opportunities (perio and endo maybe) and are hoping to expand soon.

I have also heard/seen the facilities, and they are very nice. I also heard that their board scores are top notch also. The tuition is a plus. If you are from a small town of southern illinois it may be a good fit.

It's not surprising their board scores are so high - their students have nothing do but study cause their is nothing else to do in that area.

Chrono, you make it sound like it is a bad thing that they get high board scores because of the study time put in due to lack of attractions. You know St. Louis is only about 20 minutes from there right? It seems to have plenty to do.
