I have been invited to "visit the School of Dental Medicine to meet with a committee member" and I plan on going to SIU as soon as possible. Anyone else received the same letter?

I've called SIU and they said they weren't doing interviews, or something like that (maybe mass interviews). She said that we should be getting a letter in early December to notify us if we are accepted, rejected, or waitlisted.
Was it an interview or just an invite to check out the school? I haven't received anything along those lines, nor has a friend of mine who has also applied there.
Please fill me in. That makes me nervous.
If anyone else has any other info also, please post. Thanks!

I am currently a first year dental student at SIU-SDM. When I had applied last year, I received a letter to "visit the school and visit with a committee member" as well. You probably spoke to Angela in admissions....she is correct, SIU doesn't have a formal interview. When I visited the school, the meeting was very informal. I met with a committee member for about 15 minutes and then a third year student gave me a tour of the campus. A week later I found out that I had been accepted. By the way, I didn't receive the invite until late January. 🙂

Hey ToothDoctor, thats really cool!

I'm an Illinois resident, also going for SIU. How were your stats if you don't mind? And what university did you attend?

I'm currently a sophomore.

Toothdoc,

I'm also in Illinois, I go to UIC. I'd also like to know what your stats were--and any other useful info you can give. Do you think you have to get the letter inviting you to come to meet with a committee member before they send you an acceptance letter?

Shizzle,

Hey, I am almost 100% sure that SIU will accept you without a visit/ interview/ informal interview. They said that they try to get some of the students in for a visit. I imagine it is the ones that have borderline stats and ones that live near the school ( within an hour or so). With your stats, there is no way they won't accept you. Also, it is a long drive from Chicago to Alton. I would say you are in for sure. No worries!

openwyd,

Thanks! Where else are you applying to? I want to go to UIC or Marquette, but SIU a very close third. I also applied to both Michigan schools, Iowa (rejected), Indiana (withdrew), and BU (interviewed in october). Also, where are you doing your undergrad?--sorry for all the Q's, I just think we might be in the same boat, both being from Illinios. Holla back!

Shizzle,

I finished my undergrad at Illinois State University in 2002. I am from south-central IL. I applied to SIU, UIC, Marquette, Iowa, UOP, UNLV, UNC, and Arizona. Declined by Arizona and Iowa. I have interviewed at SIU and UNC. I have a Marquette visit on Monday, Nov. 17. I am looking forward to seeing the school. I know I will fall in love with it. Marquette could be my number one school, but the tuition is outrageous. I have even been told to not worry about paying that much for my tuition because a dentist will have no problem paying it back. I understand that, but SIU and UNC will only leave me about 90K down from tuition. A 100-120K difference is huge. Anyway, I have an interview at UNLV on Dec. 5th. Right now, my first choice is UNC. It is awesome. SIU and UIC are a close second since they are in-state. I have no idea how it will pan out. I just hope to have a choice between two or more schools. I don't want to be pinned down with one school. Even though none are horrible. Anyway, good luck. Let me know where you get accepted. Out.

openwyd,

Good luck to you also! Come early December I'll post the info I get from schools. Marquette could also be my #1, because I like milwaukee and I'm kind of getting sick of UIC. I agree with your outlook on the whole tuition thing too--I'm just going to wait and see where I get accepted and decide from there. Good luck this monday!
