I just applied to SIU's MEDPREP program for the 1st admissions cycle for June 2013 entry. Has anybody else done the same?
The SIU MedPrep site makes it seem as if the program is for students who have completed all if not most of their undergraduate career and have achieved less than satisfactory grades and should use the MedPrep program primarily as a "new start." I wonder if this program would even be beneficial to a student who has done well as an undergrad....thoughts?
Thanks for the insight!Umm I am applying and I did fairly well in undergrad considering the major i chose and the university I attended but my MCAT score is low. So, I need the year of MCAT prep. If you have a decent MCAT score >25 and a good GPA >3.3 maybe consider a special masters program. I know Loyola has one that you need a 25 to apply to. But if you applied this year with no luck and your credentials are decent I think a SMP would be good because you may not need the in-depth MCAT review. It is up to you and what you are expecting to get out of the program. Good luck!
Thanks for the insight!
Bump!
Admissions day for me is February 1st. Anyone else going to be there on the 1st???
Also, for those who have successfully been accepted into the program from the first cycle congrats! However, I have a few questions:
What is the best/closest hotel?
How was the atmosphere? Did you really get to talk and get invaluable info from current MEDPREP students?
My MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION...what was the 6 hour exam containing bio, g chem and o chem like??? Is there any way to prep for it? Or is it more the less an IQ test?
How intense were the interviews? And what kind of questions should I anticipate? Like why did you suck in you academia this semester or like why do you have an unbalanced 24 MCAT? Or why do you want to participate in this program type questions?
I know I am asking a lot and in depth, but if you have already been accepted then you are doing nothing more than helping a potential future classmate.
Lastly, does finishing the program with good grades and let's say 25+ give you automatic acceptance into the med school? I've heard different answers.
Good luck to all and for those going to Admissions Interview day in the 1st and please join the Yahoo group for us to get familiar with one another and maybe we can arrange a dinner the night before. If we have made it to far in the process we have a 37 out of 60 chance of being accepted into the program, so competition should be left to those in three round cycle I am assuming, but not a 100% on that one.
Thank you in advance to the first round applicants who will provide us steadfast feed back and congrats again!
I interviewed on February 1st for Cycle 2. There were only 13 of us interviewed with only 8 being accepted in the previous cycle with only one more cycle left. I think they may be lowering the number of medprep scholars they let matriculate this up-coming year and in the future.
8!? How did you come to that number? Who confirmed it?
Would you care to reveal your stats to us, as you received an interview? Waiting on the interview notification (hopefully!) soon!
I really don't care about revealing my stats. They aren't great but here it is:
23M
3.27 GPA
3.23 science GPA
Top 100 University
That's a pretty great application, I'm sure! Are you from IL / rural / URM? (just curious as to how much you match with the purported mission statement)
What's the deal with the exam that they make you take?
Any insight???
The exams aren't that bad. They cover mostly MCAT/DAT topics. There is also an essay portion. Testing takes up most of the interview day. I was told not to study for it but I rather over prepare than be unprepared so I opened a book or two.
No one knows how the scores affect your admission but I do know that once you are accepted you will sit with your advisor and review your scores on those exams to show where you are and what you need to focus on.
Has anyone who applied for cycle 3 gotten a rejection/invitation yet? I got an email today saying that they will notify everyone of their decision on March 11th. I'm wondering if anyone has heard back from Medprep early.
