Which would you choose?
For me both have pros and cons, but I just can't seem to decide.
I live about 30 miles from UIC and 250 miles from SIU so that's something to consider!
HELP!!

I know that's why its making it so difficult to decide.
I've been hearing things about how UIC isn't what it used to be.
Is this true?
I'm not really a fan of the group learning they just started.
But, I don't really know about the SIU program?
Can anyone shed some light!
Thanks.

SIU has pretty traditional curriculum. Go to lecture, go to lab, go back home and study. Rinse and repeat. Their campus is pretty basic and small, which can be a good thing or bad thing. You can concentrate a lot more in alton, and it's much cheaper to live in ($300 for an apartment). The class sizes are small, so you really do know your classmates in and out. You get a summer break after 1st year. UIC was talked about in a similar thread like this
their clinical program at SIU pretty strong as well. between the two i would look at the cost difference. When you look at the tuition between the schools, SIU is cheaper by 70k, and when you factor living expenses the gap is even wider. most dentists say choose the cheapest school, and you're lucky to get into one that has pretty modest tuition (150k for 4 years)

👍

Awesome thank you, this was pretty helpful.
I think I'm more of a traditional learner and definitely not a city slicker.
You made my decision a lot easier.
The only thing about UIC though is how close it is to home. But in the end I won't really have time to visit that much anyways right?

hey man im in a very similar situation as you as being from orland park, a uic undergrad and someone prone to homesickness but for what its worth i chose siu cause of cost and how much easier it would be for me to concentrate and if i had to choose again theres no way i wouldnt choose siu i really like it... but visiting home is different for everyone im in the convenient situation as living close to joliet where theres an amtrak stop (theres one like two blocks from school) so it makes it really easy to go home which i do sometime every other week sometimes every third weekend... plenty of people go home less and theres one kid in the year above me from lombard i think that goes home every single weekend... basically the only thing that can hold you up is lab work and studying so if you plan accordingly its really manageable... also if youre into having fun on the weekends its not like the small town life is without its monkey shines haha

I'm from Orland too! But I think SIU is in a great position in the fact that it's very Amtrak accessible so it's not like you're REALLY giving up the city of Chicago for school, it's still accessible on the weekends. I've been so back and forth on this issue since Dec 1. I just wish the two would merge somewhere in the middle and name themselves SIUIC!

Yup the Amtrak is really accessible, not to mention they are working on a high speed rail Chicago-St.Louis that should make it much quicker, should be done by 2014

o awesome! well congratulations on getting in.. if you decide to come here youll be the lucky third person from the op here but yea i totally understand how you feel i was in the exact same position two years ago but yea i see my friends and family all the time and go to chi town pretty regularly plus you get the fun of st louis to go with it so its a pretty good deal... are you a sandburg grad then?

Hello,

For those that got accepted at SIU, do you mind to share your stats? Thank you.
